Photo by Logan Kirkland\/Ole Miss Digital Imaging Services<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\">OXFORD, Miss. \u2013 For the 49th consecutive year, writers, scholars and avid fans of Oxford&#8217;s Nobel Prize-winning author will gather at the <a href=\"http:\/\/olemiss.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">University of Mississippi<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> for the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.outreach.olemiss.edu\/events\/faulkner\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Faulkner and Yoknapatawpha Conference<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This year the conference, themed &#8220;Queer Faulkner,&#8221; will focus on the diverse genders, sexualities and desires of characters in William Faulkner&#8217;s work and people in the noted author&#8217;s life. Photo by Robert Jordan\/Ole Miss Digital Imaging Services<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Conference organizers hope to demystify some of these lesser-studied aspects of Faulkner while providing tools to keep students engaged, Watson said. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8220;He was difficult and was deliberately difficult \u2013 that was a modern signature of his writing,&#8221; he said. Faulkner can be a challenge to teach because students sometimes &#8220;shut down&#8221; when encountering his works. &#8220;They find the reading experience challenging. They don&#8217;t have the equipment to think about what the value of difficult writing might be, that writers might use a challenging technique purposefully. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8220;We need to open their minds to the value of unorthodox writing and language.
