Photo by Kevin Bain\/Ole Miss Digital Imaging Services<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\">OXFORD, Miss. \u2013 The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mississippi.edu\/ihl\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Mississippi Institutions of Higher Learning<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> has approved the creation of a new National Center for Narrative Intelligence at the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/olemiss.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">University of Mississippi<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, the first of its kind in the country.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Narrative intelligence \u2013 a human and artificial intelligence-driven process that analyzes large amounts of data to derive meaning, trends and outcomes is particularly useful in identifying the patterns and flow of misinformation and disinformation.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> It has broad professional applications in various fields including journalism, health care, national security and public policy. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8220;Information is more prolific and accessible than any other time in our history,&#8221; said Noel Wilkin, provost and executive vice chancellor for academic affairs. &#8220;This is largely because anyone with a smartphone, tablet or computer and social media account can create, disseminate and propagate information. This work is critical to our ability to make decisions and develop our opinions based on truth, not just a social media post that received the most forwards or likes.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Joe Stradinger, CEO and founder of EdgeTheory, spearheaded the idea for the center and said Oxford is the perfect place to explore and advance the use of narrative intelligence. The Mississippi-based narrative intelligence firm with an office at Insight Park will be the center&#8217;s tech partner. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8220;This is the place to do it,&#8221; Stradinger said. &#8220;This is the home of narratives and storytelling.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Andrea Hickerson, dean of the <a href=\"https:\/\/jnm.olemiss.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">School of Journalism and New Media<\/a>, and Wes Jennings, chair of the <a href=\"https:\/\/legalstudies.olemiss.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Department of Criminal Justice and Legal Studies<\/a>, will co-direct the n<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ew center, which aims to enhance the exploration and understanding of narrative intelligence in the digital era. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As people increasingly seek news from sources such as social media and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/reutersinstitute.politics.ox.ac.uk\/digital-news-report\/2023\/united-states\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">trust in traditional news outlets plummets<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, false or misleading information has become widespread and easily accessible. According to the Pew Research Center, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/short-reads\/2022\/06\/06\/americans-see-different-global-threats-facing-the-country-now-than-in-march-2020\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">more than 70% of Americans consider misinformation<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> on the internet to be a major threat to society. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Foreign governments, including Russia, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oecd.org\/ukraine-hub\/policy-responses\/disinformation-and-russia-s-war-of-aggression-against-ukraine-37186bde\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">have taken advantage of that distrust to launch disinformation campaigns<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> that mislead and manipulate users of social media. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Narrative intelligence can help governments, agencies and people better understand the world around them and evaluate foreign information campaigns more effectively, Stradinger said. <\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_117157\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/um-launching-nations-first-center-for-narrative-intelligence\/wes-jennings\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-117157\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-117157\" class=\"wp-image-117157\" src=\"http:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/UCIMG-2767-3-183x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"246\" srcset=\"https:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/UCIMG-2767-3-183x300.jpg 183w, https:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/UCIMG-2767-3-768x1258.jpg 768w, https:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/UCIMG-2767-3-938x1536.jpg 938w, https:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/UCIMG-2767-3-640x1049.jpg 640w, https:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/UCIMG-2767-3.jpg 1250w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-117157\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Wes Jennings<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8220;We&#8217;re not here to shape narratives; we&#8217;re here to understand narratives,&#8221; he said. &#8220;We&#8217;re here to study how narratives affect the world.&#8221; <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Whereas a person may read 100 articles or posts to determine the truth of an event or statistic over a number of hours, artificial intelligence can parse through 10,000 articles, synthesize the data collected and produce a summary in seconds, Jennings said. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8220;And even if you do it by hand, it&#8217;s static,&#8221; he said. &#8220;The entire narrative that I just produced could change tomorrow. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8220;AI can do that perpetually. It&#8217;ll keep updating and you&#8217;ll have a living, breathing, immediate and relevant time stamp on whatever information you&#8217;re interested in.&#8221; <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Though the center is primarily a research facility, administrators also plan to offer opportunities for students, faculty, staff and community members to train in the use of narrative intelligence for education, research and certifications, Jennings said. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8220;People are bombarded with information all the time and it is based on the algorithms for purveyors of this kind of content \u2013 it&#8217;s geared and tailored for what you&#8217;ve read before and what it thinks you&#8217;re interested in,&#8221; he said. &#8220;We want people to be in a diverse and inclusive world and environment who have all the information at their disposal, but still filtered through the lens of truth.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The center presents an opportunity for cross-disciplinary collaboration, as the use of narrative intelligence can benefit a variety of fields, Hickerson said. <\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_117156\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/um-launching-nations-first-center-for-narrative-intelligence\/andrea-hickerson\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-117156\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-117156\" class=\"wp-image-117156\" src=\"http:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/UCIMG-2767-2-183x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"245\" srcset=\"https:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/UCIMG-2767-2-183x300.jpg 183w, https:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/UCIMG-2767-2.jpg 605w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-117156\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Andrea Hickerson<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8220;Artificial intelligence is going to influence every profession,&#8221; she said. &#8220;I&#8217;m excited about the center because my vision for journalism and communications is that we are central to problem solving and making sense of information. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8220;That&#8217;s what journalism is \u2013 making sense of accurate information. It&#8217;s hugely powerful to me to have the School of Journalism at the head of this endeavor.&#8221; <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As artificial intelligence and its applications become readily available, it&#8217;s important for businesses, governments and individuals to know how best to use them, Stradinger said.
