Ford Center for the Performing Arts. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">With former Sen. Trent Lott moderating, former Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour joined Dr. Deborah Birx, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bushcenter.org\/people\/deborah-l-birx-m-d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">former director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention&#8217;s Division of Global HIV\/AIDS<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">; Paul Critchlow, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nvvmf.org\/2020\/09\/12\/paul-critchlow\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">former press secretary to Pennsylvania&#8217;s governor<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">; and Sam Skinner, former <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lakeforest.edu\/academics\/majors-and-minors\/public-policy\/privacy-and-the-internet-series\/sam-skinner\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">U.S. secretary of transportation and White House chief of staff<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.armyheritage.org\/events\/follow-me-citizens-soldiers-and-crisis-leadership\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">&#8220;Follow Me: Citizens, Soldiers and Crisis Leadership.&#8221;<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">During their service, the panelists have faced national and international tragedies such as the COVID-19 pandemic, Hurricane Katrina, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/darrp.noaa.gov\/oil-spills\/exxon-valdez\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Exxon Valdez oil spill<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> of 1989 and the 1979 meltdown of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nrc.gov\/reading-rm\/doc-collections\/fact-sheets\/3mile-isle.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">the Three Mile Island nuclear reactor<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8220;My motto for leadership is, &#8216;Always ride to the sounds of the cannons \u2013 wherever there&#8217;s a problem, go there,'&#8221; Lott said. &#8220;Let the people see you. Make sure you understand the magnitude of the crisis you&#8217;re facing.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Each of the panelists had in some way followed that advice during their responses to national or regional tragedies. Birx traveled to almost every state during the COVID-19 pandemic, speaking with doctors, patients and family members. Barbour spent much of the time following Hurricane Katrina on Mississippi&#8217;s Gulf Coast assessing damage and speaking with citizens who had lost everything. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">That first step \u2013 understanding the problem \u2013 is key to maintaining communication and relationships with those affected by crisis, Skinner said. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8220;What you do learn is you immediately have to keep people informed of what&#8217;s going on,&#8221; he said. &#8220;You have to be on the scene. Preparations \u2013 like those Mississippians had made for each major hurricane following <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.weather.gov\/mob\/camille\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Hurricane Camille&#8217;s disastrous path through the South in 1969<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> \u2013 can fail, and leaders must be ready to change the plan if they do, Barbour said. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8220;The problem is we didn&#8217;t prepare for the right hurricane \u2013 we prepared for Camille,&#8221; he said. What you learn is the more you prepare, the better off you&#8217;re going to be, even if you made the wrong decisions. That&#8217;s what happened to us.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8220;It (Hurricane Katrina) was the worst natural disaster in American history at the time. All of us Mississippians know how bad it was. We adjusted from that plan almost immediately, and I think had a pretty reasonably good reaction.&#8221; <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">After the response and first aid have ebbed, lasting change must be made, the panel advised. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Following the Three Mile Island meltdown, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nrc.gov\/reading-rm\/doc-collections\/fact-sheets\/3mile-isle.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">United States passed sweeping legislation<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> to tighten restraints on nuclear power plant operations. After Hurricane Katrina, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fema.gov\/about\/history#:~:text=Congress%20passed%20the%20Post%2DKatrina,of%20Homeland%20Security%20for%20all\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Congress made FEMA a distinct agency in the Department of Homeland Security<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, hoping to bolster aid in future disasters. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">But no lasting change has come in the wake of COVID-19, a problem Birx warns will cause lasting damage to the country&#8217;s pandemic preparedness. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8220;This is the only big disaster that we&#8217;ve talked about that hasn&#8217;t resulted in change at the federal and state level,&#8221; Birx said. &#8220;We have the figures, and we have the data. Why aren&#8217;t we making the change?&#8221; <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Keerthin Karthikeyan, a freshman from Oxford majoring in biology, public policy leadership and international studies, said he was drawn to the event because of the notoriety of the speakers and their broad leadership experience. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8220;I loved when they weren&#8217;t wholeheartedly in agreement,&#8221; Karthikeyan said. &#8220;It was an example of polite discourse, and we could see each person&#8217;s view. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8220;They didn&#8217;t have to agree. They could have different opinions and still work together.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Grace Hoseman, a freshman Southern studies and public policy leadership major from Mobile, Alabama, said Skinner&#8217;s portion of the talk resonated for her. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8220;He said leadership was being the person to stand up; that stood out to me,&#8221; Hoseman said. &#8220;As a leader on campus and a member of the Trent Lott Leadership Institute, being that person who stands up and speaks out is who I aspire to be.&#8221; <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/armyheritage.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Army Heritage Center Foundation<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/bgrdc.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">BGR Group<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> hosted the panel in support of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ahec.armywarcollege.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">U.S. Army Heritage and Education Center<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and Ole Miss&#8217; <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/politicalscience.olemiss.edu\/barbour-center\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Haley Barbour Center for the Study of American Politics.<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lottleader.olemiss.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Trent Lott Leadership Institute<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> helped coordinate the event. <\/span><\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>OXFORD, Miss. \u2013 Five state and national leaders shared lessons from their struggles and successes of leadership in crisis Thursday evening (Sept. 14) at the University of Mississippi&#8216;s Gertrude C.
