Adobe Stock photo<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\">OXFORD, Miss. \u2013 As upper respiratory illness season moves into full swing, two <a href=\"http:\/\/olemiss.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">University of Mississippi<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> health professionals have some advice on dealing with a lesser-known but common malady: adenovirus.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Adenoviruses are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/adenovirus\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">a common cause of upper respiratory illness<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> that can manifest in many flu-like symptoms \u2013 such as coughing, fever, sore throat and acute bronchitis \u2013 but with added effect of pink eye, diarrhea and nausea. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8220;Adenovirus is sneaky,&#8221; said Alex Langhart, director of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/healthcenter.olemiss.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">University Health Services<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. &#8220;It is not routinely tested for in primary and urgent care settings due to its mild symptoms and the lack of availability of specific treatment. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8220;However, people with weakened immune symptoms and chronic conditions are at higher risk of developing severe infection. Though rare, it is important to be aware of symptoms and discuss with your provider if the virus has been identified as circulating in your community.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_117749\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/news-you-can-use-what-everyone-should-know-about-adenovirus\/skb_3999-ac-jpg-3\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-117749\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-117749\" class=\"wp-image-117749\" src=\"https:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/UCIMG-2827-2-183x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"246\" srcset=\"https:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/UCIMG-2827-2-183x300.jpg 183w, https:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/UCIMG-2827-2-768x1259.jpg 768w, https:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/UCIMG-2827-2-937x1536.jpg 937w, https:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/UCIMG-2827-2-640x1049.jpg 640w, https:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/UCIMG-2827-2.jpg 1249w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-117749\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dr. David Coon<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Adenoviruses are often mistaken for a common cold, but telling the doctor all the symptoms you are experiencing can help better identify this illness, said Dr. David Coon, a physician at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/healthcenter.olemiss.edu\/services-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Student Health Services<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8220;Remember, antibiotics are not effective against viruses,&#8221; Coon said.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Patients should seek emergency hospital care if they start to experience severe dizziness, shortness of breath, severe chest pain or the inability to hold down fluids, Coon said. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Adenoviruses spread like many other common illnesses \u2013 through contact, coughing and sneezing. Taking precautions such as frequent handwashing and avoiding high-contact surfaces such as doorknobs, handrails and personal objects can help slow the spread of adenoviruses, Langhart said. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8220;Take the same precautions you would to avoid flu, COVID-19 and other upper respiratory viruses,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Continue to practice proper hand hygiene, cover your face when sneezing or coughing and stay home when you are sick.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Both Coon and Langhart recommend that campus members who believe they may have an adenovirus infection should schedule an appointment with <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">University Health Services<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. Employee Health offers telehealth appointments and Student Health partners with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/healthcenter.olemiss.edu\/ummc-2-you-telehealth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">UMMC to provide unlimited visits with 24\/7 access to telehealth for $60 per semeste<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">r.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8220;Most adenovirus infections are mild, but one should still seek care for any upper respiratory symptoms,&#8221; Coon said. &#8220;There is no specific treatment or approved antiviral medicine.
