All three are set to interview this weekend for the Rhodes Scholarship.<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\">OXFORD, Miss. \u2013 Two <a href=\"http:\/\/olemiss.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">University of Mississippi<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> students and one recent graduate have been named as finalists for the prestigious Rhodes scholarships. One of them is also a finalist for the Marshall Scholarship. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Jilkiah Bryant, who graduated in 2023 with a degree in public health and health sciences; Madeleine Dotson, a senior majoring in economics, Arabic and political science; and Brandon Kriplean, a senior international studies major, will interview this weekend for one of the coveted positions as a Rhodes Scholar. Bryant also is a finalist for the Marshall Scholarship. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8220;These are the highest and most prestigious awards out there,&#8221; said Vivian Ibrahim, director of the Office of National Scholarship Advisement. &#8220;This is incredibly exciting.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rhodeshouse.ox.ac.uk\/scholarships\/the-rhodes-scholarship\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Rhodes Scholarship<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> allows students from around the world to study at the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom to complete their master&#8217;s or doctoral degree. UM has produced <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/arielle-hudson-named-ums-27th-rhodes-scholar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">27 Rhodes scholars, the most recent being Arielle Hudson, of Tunica<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. Hudson was the university&#8217;s first African American female Rhodes recipient. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marshallscholarship.org\/about\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Marshall Scholarship<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> funds two years of American students&#8217; study in master&#8217;s degrees of their choosing in the United Kingdom. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8220;Our three finalists are remarkably different,&#8221; Ibrahim said. &#8220;They truly fit into the ideals of the Rhodes Scholar, but in very different ways.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_118520\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/two-um-students-one-graduate-named-rhodes-and-marshall-finalists\/jilkiah-bryant-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-118520\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-118520\" class=\"wp-image-118520\" src=\"https:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/UCIMG-2883-2-183x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"246\" srcset=\"https:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/UCIMG-2883-2-183x300.jpg 183w, https:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/UCIMG-2883-2-768x1260.jpg 768w, https:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/UCIMG-2883-2-640x1050.jpg 640w, https:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/UCIMG-2883-2.jpg 935w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-118520\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jilkiah Bryant<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Bryant, of Macon, won a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/two-mississippi-students-awarded-truman-scholarships\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">prestigious Harry S. Truman Scholarship<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> in 2022<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and was a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mclean.olemiss.edu\/ceed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">CEED Scholar<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, Luckyday Scholar and Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors Scholar during her time at Ole Miss. Though she initially came to Ole Miss as a pre-medical student, Bryant said she found a passion for public health during her studies. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8220;During the summer of COVID, I took a community health class, and it made me realize I didn&#8217;t want to be on the side of medicine where I saw people when they were already sick,&#8221; she said. &#8220;I wanted to be on the preventative side. I want to put structures in place that prevent those things.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8220;I want to be someone who fights for the rights of people to have health care, to lead healthy lives.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Following that passion, Bryant coordinated health fairs in rural Mississippi in 2021 during the COVID-19 pandemic to widen access to vaccinations and founded Project Powerful, an organization that pairs high school students with volunteer opportunities across the state and organizes philanthropic efforts. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">&#8220;I really want to work on the community level,&#8221; she said. &#8220;Working at the community level, you impact the people who are the most in need. As a Rhodes Scholar, Dotson said she would like to earn a Master of Philosophy degree to better understand water science and management. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8220;I&#8217;ve always been pretty cognizant of water issues, whether it being issues with drinking water or how natural disasters can impact a coastal environment,&#8221; she said. &#8220;I think it was always in the back of my mind, but being here at Ole Miss, I&#8217;ve gotten to explore that interest a little further.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Dotson, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/ole-miss-junior-madeleine-dotson-named-truman-scholar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">the university&#8217;s 18th<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"none\">Truman Scholar<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, is also a Stamps Scholarship recipient, a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/clscholarship.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">2023 Critical Language Scholar<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and a two-time <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsliforyouth.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">National Security Language Initiative for Youth<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> recipient. Dotson has studied extensively in Morocco and said she hopes to one day work in the Environmental Protection Agency&#8217;s water division. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8220;Madeleine has the incredible ability to bring community together,&#8221; Ibrahim said. &#8220;She embodies the notion of wanting to get things done while caring about the science and scholarship behind it.&#8221; <\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_118522\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/two-um-students-one-graduate-named-rhodes-and-marshall-finalists\/brandon-kriplean\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-118522\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-118522\" class=\"wp-image-118522\" src=\"https:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/UCIMG-2883-4-183x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"246\" srcset=\"https:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/UCIMG-2883-4-183x300.jpg 183w, https:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/UCIMG-2883-4.jpg 407w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-118522\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Brandon Kriplean<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Kriplean, from Franklin, Tennessee, said being selected as a Rhodes Scholar would allow him to continue his research into the intersection of religion and politics. Kriplean hopes to study the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/conversion-therapy-uk-government-kicks-ban-down-the-road-and-theres-a-major-problem-with-whats-been-proposed-so-far-198370\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">United Kingdom&#8217;s potential banning of conversion therapy<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, a move that has been discussed for years but never made. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8220;The U.K. has been talking about banning it for five years and hasn&#8217;t done it,&#8221; he said. &#8220;It&#8217;s an interesting way to see how religion plays a role in political decision making. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8220;How can we protect parents&#8217; rights while also not having kids suffering from depression and anxiety and stuff like that? <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Why don&#8217;t we ask these big questions and explore in a way that doesn&#8217;t cause physical damage to each other? It&#8217;s a very hard line to walk.&#8221; <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Kriplean has studied abroad at Blackfriars Hall, part of the University of Oxford, and did mission work in Kenya and Uruguay. Though he is no longer religious, Kriplean said that coming from a background of Christian faith gives him insight into these problems. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">&#8220;Brandon is one of those unique people who is in pursuit of knowledge,&#8221; Ibrahim said. &#8220;He&#8217;s in search of truth, whatever truth means.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0in;\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">The Rhodes Scholarship recipients will be announced Saturday (Nov. 11).<\/span><\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>OXFORD, Miss. \u2013 Two University of Mississippi students and one recent graduate have been named as finalists for the prestigious Rhodes scholarships.
