Delivers keynote address at UM’s April 29 C.A.R.E. Fair and Workshop<\/em><\/p>\n

OXFORD, Miss. –\u00a0 In addition to delivering the keynote address at the University of Mississippi’s Caring for Aging Relatives Effectively, or C.A.R.E., Fair and Workshop, Laura Feldman is to speak several times next week in Oxford.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Feldman, a grassroots organizer, educator and activist with the Washington, D.C.-based National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare, presents “Politics of Aging: A Medicare and Social Security Update” at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Tuesday (April 28), in the Ole Miss Student Union, Room 405.<\/p>\n

Her presentations Wednesday also take place on the Union’s fourth floor. Times and topics are:
– 9 a.m. – Politics of Aging (keynote address)
– 12:30 p.m. – Social Security: Is It Secure?
– 2 p.m. – Medicare: Should We Care?<\/p>\n

At 2:30 p.m. Thursday, Feldman presents “Everything You Want to Know About Medicare and Social Security” in the Azalea Room at the Azalea Gardens Retirement Community.<\/p>\n

Wednesday’s C.A.R.E. Fair takes place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Student Union lobby and includes exhibits with representatives on hand to answer questions on such issues as retirement communities and housing options, legal services on wills and living wills, local and state aging services, Alzheimer’s disease and support services, home based care, health issues and retiree volunteer opportunities.<\/p>\n

Held in conjunction with the fair, the C.A.R.E. Workshop includes a national live teleconference of the Hospice Foundation of America, a Virtual Dementia Tour and Feldman’s three presentations — all on the Union’s fourth floor.<\/p>\n

The Hospice Foundation teleconference on “Living with Grief: Diversity and End of Life Issues” airs from 12:30 to 3:15 p.m., with Frank Senso, professor of media and public affairs at George Washington University and special correspondent with CNN, as moderator.<\/p>\n

The Virtual Dementia Tour provides a glimpse into the world of an individual suffering from sensory and memory loss. It is to be presented at 10:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 2 p.m. by the state Department of Mental Health’s Kathy VanCleave and Dianne Arnold.<\/p>\n

Elder abuse, neglect and adult protective services will be discussed at 10:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 2 p.m. by the Mississippi Division of Aging and Adult Services’ Edna Clark.<\/p>\n

\u00a0Jo Ann O’Quin, professor of social work in the School of Applied Sciences and organizer of the annual C.A.R.E. Fair and Workshop, encourages caregivers of aging relatives, potential caregivers or those interested in their own aging to drop by the fair or register for the workshop.<\/p>\n

The fair and workshop are free to UM faculty and staff, as well as local citizens caring for aging relatives. To attend the workshop, professional caregivers and professionals seeking CEUs pay $20 and $50, respectively. Workshop space is limited, so all should pre-register.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
