OXFORD,
\nMiss. – Experts in finance, economics and corporate law are to speak
\nabout the current financial crisis Thursday (April 30) during a panel
\ndiscussion at the University of Mississippi.<\/p>\n
Hosted by the
\nSchool of Business Administration and sponsored by the Financier’s
\nClub, the program is set for 6-7 p.m. in Holman Hall, Room 30. It is
\nfree and open to the public.<\/p>\n
Panelists plan to discuss the causes and effects of the crisis, the effects of policy responses and what the future may hold, said Ken Cyree, business school dean and Frank R. Day\/Mississippi Bankers Association Chair of Banking.<\/p>\n
Panelists include Cyree; Mercer Bullard, assistant professor of law and expert in securities law; Matthew Hill, assistant professor of real estate; Bill Rayburn, CEO of FNC Inc.; and Bill Shughart, Frederick Barnard Distinguished Professor of Economics. The moderator is Mike Mitchell, director of business development at FNC.<\/p>\n
Financier’s Club President Mario Hilliard, a senior banking and finance major from Oxford, proposed the idea for the event. Hilliard said he suggested the discussion for multiple recession-related reasons, including the stock market decline, layoffs at major financial institutions and the suffering mortgage market.<\/p>\n
“The purpose of this panel discussion is to provide insight into the current financial environment,” Hilliard said. “Our goal is to create an atmosphere that allows the panelists to engage the audience in an interactive exchange of perspectives. I hope the attendees will leave this event more informed about the causes and effects of the current financial crisis. More importantly, I would like for them to take the various points of views expressed and be able to incorporate them in their economic analyses.”<\/p>\n
The audience is encouraged to participate, Cyree said. Pens and paper will be available for written questions.<\/p>\n
“It should be an interesting panel and lively discussion,” Cyree said. “I hope students, faculty, administration, business owners and community leaders will attend.”<\/p>\n
