OXFORD,
\nMiss. – A free leadership workshop for boys currently in eighth through
\n11th grades is scheduled May 16 at the University of Mississippi.<\/p>\n
The
\nevent is free for participants and lunch is to be provided. Enrollment
\nis limited to the first 120 boys to contact Thomas D. Wallace,
\nassistant to the provost and workshop facilitator, at 662-915-1677 or
\ntdwallac@olemiss.edu.<\/p>\n
“The workshop is a way for the University of Mississippi to give back to the community,” Wallace said.<\/p>\n
The
\nUM Athletic Association, Office of Enrollment Management and Office of
\nthe Provost are organizing the event, which will be held at the Indoor
\nPractice Facility banquet room. The workshop begins with registration
\n8-8:45 a.m., followed by the welcome and introductions. Concurrent
\ntraining sessions run from 9:45 to 10:30 a.m. and from 10:35 to 11:20
\na.m. An hourlong panel discussion concludes the workshop, which will be
\nfollowed by lunch from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.<\/p>\n
“I admire the passion Dr. Wallace has for today’s youth,” said Houston Nutt, head football coach and workshop facilitator. “I am here because I believe in leadership. I believe these young men will be difference-makers in their school, their community and in their country. They are our future.”<\/p>\n
Besides Wallace and Nutt, workshop facilitators include Whitman Smith, director of Enrollment Services; Don Cole, associate provost; and Andy Kennedy, head men’s basketball coach.<\/p>\n
Other panelists from UM are Kent Austin, assistant football coach; Derek Horne, senior associate athletic director; Artair Rogers, Associated Study Body president; and several student-athletes. Terry Johnson, author and leadership trainer, will also participate.<\/p>\n
“I’m excited to be a part of this event as we attempt to influence the leaders of tomorrow,” Kennedy said. “This leadership summit will address the many challenges all leaders must overcome in today’s world.”<\/p>\n
Plans call for a similar workshop for girls to be scheduled in August.<\/p>\n
