{"id":126,"date":"2009-10-01T13:53:05","date_gmt":"2009-10-01T18:53:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ezing.me\/transfer\/?p=126"},"modified":"2014-09-23T08:36:01","modified_gmt":"2014-09-23T13:36:01","slug":"iran-howorth-lecture","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/iran-howorth-lecture\/","title":{"rendered":"Scholar to Discuss Women&#8217;s Status In Iran for Annual Howorth Lecture"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>OXFORD, Miss. &#8211; The status of women in Iran is to be explored Thursday<br \/>\n(Oct. 8) when a renowned women&#8217;s rights scholar visits the University<br \/>\nof Mississippi as guest lecturer for the Sarah Isom Center for Women<br \/>\nand Gender Studies.<br \/>\n<br \/><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\nThe 15th Annual Lucy Somerville Howorth Lecture features Nayereh<br \/>\nTohidi, professor of women&#8217;s and gender studies at the University of<br \/>\nCalifornia at Northridge, who plans to discuss &#8220;&#8216;Women, Islam and<br \/>\nDemocracy in the Middle East: The Case of Iran.&#8221; The program, set for 7<br \/>\np.m. in Bryant Hall, Room 209, is free and open to the public.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n&#8220;This lecture will first introduce the complexity and diversity of the<br \/>\n&#8216;women question&#8217; in the MENA (Middle East and North Africa) region by<br \/>\ndescribing the specifics of the gender gap, including the common<br \/>\ncharacteristics as well as variations in Muslim women&#8217;s status,&#8221; Tohidi<br \/>\nsaid.&#8221; Then the focus will shift to Iran explaining the contradictory<br \/>\nor paradoxical nature of women&#8217;s status.&#8221;\n<\/p>\n<p>\nTohidi also plans to explain why women played such a prominent role in<br \/>\nIran&#8217;s recent post-election pro-democracy Green Movement by summarizing<br \/>\nthe last 100 years of the Iranian women&#8217;s movement.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n&#8220;Since our Western media have given much attention to the election and<br \/>\nprotests in Iran recently, this will be an opportunity to understand<br \/>\nthe topics of women, Islam and democracy from a non-Western source and<br \/>\npre-eminent expert,&#8221; said Mary Carruth, director of the Isom Center.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nTohidi is the author of &#8220;Globalization, Gender and Religion: The<br \/>\nPolitics of Women&#8217;s Rights in Catholic and Muslim Contexts&#8221; (Palgrave<br \/>\nMacmillan, 2001) and &#8220;Women in Muslim Societies: Diversity within<br \/>\nUnity&#8221; (Lynne Rienner Publishers, 1998). She also has consulted with<br \/>\nthe United Nations on projects regarding gender and civil society<br \/>\nbuilding. A graduate of the UM law school, Howorth<br \/>\nachieved national prominence during her long career in public service,<br \/>\nincluding her enthusiastic support for women&#8217;s rights.
