OXFORD, Miss. – Ukrainian-born American pianist Inna Faliks performs Tuesday (June 16) at the University of Mississippi.<\/p>\n

Faliks’
\n7 p.m. concert in Nutt Auditorium is part of UM’s Piano Discoveries
\nCamp, with proceeds going to fund 2010 camp scholarships. Tickets are
\n$8 for students and seniors, and $12 for general admission.<\/p>\n

“The
\nconcept behind Piano Discoveries is to introduce young piano students
\nto a variety of styles and activities giving them a chance to explore
\nall the wonderful possibilities and opportunities their skills offer,”
\nsaid Ian Hominick, associate professor of music and camp coordinator.<\/p>\n

“We
\ntry to change the activities from year to year and introduce
\nprofessional pianists like Inna Faliks to keep things fresh. The
\nstudents and faculty form a special bond, which makes the week a lot of
\nfun.”<\/p>\n


Faliks is slated to perform Beethoven’s “Eroica Variations and Fugue” and “Fantasie Op. 77,” Ravel’s “Gaspard de la Nuit ” and two pieces by Russian composer Boris Pasternak, as well as “Ballade in Black and White” by Jan Fredlin, composed especially for Faliks in 2005.<\/p>\n

Faliks, who moved to America at age 10, has been described by one critic as “a delight to hear … riveting … passionate and playful, warmly poetic.” The 2005 recipient of the coveted Pro Musicis International Award in New York and 2005 grand prize winner of the St. Charles International Piano Competition, Faliks debuted with the Chicago Symphony at age 15. She has performed at Carnegie Hall and prestigious venues in France, Italy, Switzerland, Russia, Ukraine and Japan.<\/p>\n

Faliks’ performances include appearances with the Concert Artists of Baltimore and South Carolina Philharmonic, concerts at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and a recital at Bargemusic Festival (New York), as well as numerous broadcasts in Chicago and Los Angeles.<\/p>\n

She is founder and curator of the new interdisciplinary series Music\/Words, featuring live poetry and classical music performances in New York City. She is a member of the piano faculty of North Eastern Illinois University in Chicago. She holds an artist’s diploma from the prestigious Accademia Pianistica Internazionale, where she studied with Boris Petrushansky. She recently received her doctorate at Stony Brook University (New York), studying with Gilbert Kalish. Her other teachers include Leon Fleisher and Ann Schein at Peabody Conservatory of Johns Hopkins University (Maryland).<\/p>\n
