\nOXFORD, Miss. – William Pittman Andrews is a frequent traveler into the world of art but to him it’s a two-way street.\n<\/p>\n

\nThe new director of the University of Mississippi Museum and
\nHistoric Houses makes an annual pilgrimage to New York City to view the
\nworks of the great Masters and rising contemporaries.\n<\/p>\n

\nWhile he finds such sojourns to be personally rewarding, he also stops
\nalong the way to encourage people to explore the valuable and renowned
\ncollections found within the halls of his latest workplace, and he
\ninvites noteworthy artists to visit and exhibit their work.\n<\/p>\n

\n“Ole Miss is a cultural mecca; the museum and its collections
\ndefinitely drew me to accept the position here,” Andrews said. “The
\nmuseum’s Robinson Collection of Greco-Roman sculpture, the
\nMillington-Barnard Collection of Historic Scientific Instruments and
\nrepository of Southern folk art were like a triple home run for me.”\n<\/p>\n

\nExpressing his support for the new director, Morris Stocks, UM
\nprovost and vice chancellor for academic affairs, said, “Mr. Andrews
\nhas broad, extensive experience with museums, and he brings a breadth
\nof knowledge, energy and excitement. His wide-ranging expertise aligns
\nremarkably well with the strengths of our wonderful museum collections.
\nHe will invigorate our museum and help lead us to the next level of
\nexcellence.”\n<\/p>\n

\nBesides attracting exhibitions and increased traffic to the
\nmuseum, Andrews stated two primary objectives. “I want us to regularly
\nsend out quality exhibitions. The works of artists like Theora
\nHamblett, Luster Willis and Sulton Rogers should all be traveling to
\ngreat exhibiting institutions beyond the South.\n<\/p>\n

\n“I also want the museum to continue acquiring the very best
\nrepresentations of various artists, genres, styles and periods for our
\ncollections. Because acquisitions are a critical part of the museum
\nprogram, we need new additions to remain vibrant and vital.”\n<\/p>\n

\nAcknowledging that both traveling exhibitions and acquisitions can be
\ncostly, Andrews said he is encouraged by the enthusiasm and support by
\nmuseum and university staff as well as members of the Oxford-Lafayette
\nCounty community.\n<\/p>\n

\nEveryone that I’ve met so far has been very passionate about what goes
\non here, which is very attractive to me,” Andrews said. “Likewise, my
\nwife Stacie and I are excited about joining the local art community via
\nthe Yoknapatawpha Arts Council, Oxford Artists Guild and other
\norganizations.”\n<\/p>\n

\nWell known in the art community statewide and beyond, Andrews was named
\nthe 2008 Mississippi Arts Commission Visual Arts Fellow. He has had
\nsolo exhibitions in Ellisville, Greenville, Columbus, Laurel and
\nMeridian. He has also participated in group exhibitions in Atlanta,
\nWashington, D.C., Boston, Chicago, St. Louis, Brooklyn and Little Rock.\n<\/p>\n

\n“William is motivated by the power of the arts; he demonstrates vision
\nand imagination,” said Malcolm White, executive director of the
\nMississippi Arts Council. “He is not bound by the limits of the status
\nquo and is an asset to the creative community of Mississippi.” \u00a0
\nAndrews holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Mississippi State
\nUniversity.\n<\/p>\n

\nFormerly, he was director of galleries for the College of
\nArchitecture, Art and Design and served on the art faculty at MSU. He
\nalso taught art at Starkville High School in the early 1990s. He
\nexpressed hopes that his third and terminal degree will eventually be
\nearned during his UM tenure.\n<\/p>\n

\n“The classical tradition at Ole Miss is so great, I’ve always wanted to earn a Ph.D. from Ole Miss,” he said.\n<\/p>\n

\nForging ahead with his plans for the museum’s growth and continued
\nsuccess in his chosen career, Andrews exudes a calm confidence. He says
\nthat by relying on his perspectives as an artist, he has more often
\nthan not made decisions that have been rewarding in his personal and
\nprofessional life.\n<\/p>\n

\n“That’s how I came to this amazing experience in Oxford and at Ole
\nMiss,” Andrews said. “So far, my instincts have never led me wrong.”\n<\/p>\n
