OXFORD, Miss. – In an unstable job market, many students have second
\nthoughts about landing their dream job after graduation. Through events
\nheld during Ole Miss Career Week, Sept. 14-17, University of
\nMississippi students can weigh their options after undergraduate school.
\n
<\/p>\n
\nSponsored by the Ole Miss Career Center, Career Week is a series of
\nevents held to encourage students to start thinking early about their
\nfuture careers and graduate school options. Some UM majors have 100
\npercent placement rates, and Career Week helps to reinforce these
\nstatistics.\n<\/p>\n
\n“We mainly want to give students information so
\nthat they are able to make choices about either graduate\/professional
\nschools or find a job opportunity,” said Jonathan Harrington, associate
\ndirector of the career center.\n<\/p>\n
\nA Graduate and Professional School Fair is scheduled for 2-4:30
\np.m. Monday (Sept. 14) at the Inn at Ole Miss Ballroom. Representatives
\nfrom more than 30 graduate\/professional schools from across the nation
\nwill be present to discuss application requirements and financial aid
\nresources.\n<\/p>\n
\nA Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics – or STEM –
\nworkshop will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday (Sept. 16) in Anderson Hall,
\nRoom 137, for students in those areas of study. Sponsored by Northrop
\nGrumman, the workshop will address technical resumes, interviewing
\ntechniques and how to use EmployUM. Dinner will be provided by Taylor
\nGrocery at 5 p.m.\n<\/p>\n
\nThe All-Majors Career Fair is scheduled for 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
\nThursday (Sept. 17) on the third floor of the Turner Center. Employers
\nfrom sales, marketing, engineering, accounting, insurance, business,
\nnonprofit, government, health care and other industries will be present.\n<\/p>\n
\nHarrington stresses that students don’t need to wait until their senior year to attend a Career Fair.\n<\/p>\n
\n“Career fairs during students’ sophomore and junior years are
\nimportant,” Harrington said. “Usually students think that career fairs
\nare only for seniors, but they really need to start networking early.
\nAnd by their senior year, hopefully they won’t have to worry about job
\nsearching because they will already have an offer.”\n<\/p>\n
\nHarrington also encourages students to register at the Career
\nCenter to fully benefit from the opportunities available for on-campus
\ninterviews.\n<\/p>\n
\n“Each year we have over 100 companies that hold interviews on
\ncampus,” he said. “Students need to get registered with us so that they
\ncan learn about that.”\n<\/p>\n
