\nCoaching last year helped Clarksdale team to state finals<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nOXFORD, Miss. – As a product of Clarksdale’s public schools, Donyell
\nMyles remembers the challenges he and other students faced in their
\npursuit of a higher education.\n<\/p>\n

“Growing up in Clarksdale, I know that resources there are extremely
\nlimited,” said the senior engineering major at the University of
\nMississippi. “I have always wanted to give back to the community that I
\nknow and love despite the bad reputation it has developed over the
\nyears.”<\/p>\n

\nIn late 2008, Myles found the perfect opportunity to do just that,
\nwhich resulted in an exciting outcome and a longer commitment, he said.\n<\/p>\n

\nMyles, this year’s president of the campus chapter of the National
\nSociety of Black Engineers, learned about MathCounts, a national
\nenrichment, coaching and competition program that promotes middle
\nschool mathematics achievement, through the UM School of Engineering
\nand the Center for Mathematics and Science Education. Myles established
\na service project and drove to Clarksdale to help students practice
\nmath problems and prepare for the upcoming MathCounts competition.\n<\/p>\n

\nThe annual competition features the challenges of a school sporting
\nevent and begins with school and regional matches that lead to state
\nand national finals. The northeast and northwest Mississippi regional
\nevents are held each February on UM’s Oxford campus.\n<\/p>\n

\nDoris Crawford, central office administrator of the Clarksdale
\nMunicipal School District; Scott Dennis, MathCounts coach at Oakhurst
\nMiddle School; and Angela Griffin, MathCounts coach at W.A . Higgins
\nJunior High School, brought students to campus for the 2009 northwest
\nregional competition.\n<\/p>\n

\nThey scored well in the regional competition, and Myles continued
\ncoaching the team to prepare them for the state finals in March at
\nHinds Community College.\n<\/p>\n

\n“Seeing the excitement of the children and realizing what this meant to
\nthem was so rewarding,” he said. “To know that they were successful in
\nthe regionals and made it to the statewide competition really says a
\nlot about them and has made me very proud.”\n<\/p>\n

\nMyles and other Ole Miss engineering majors are preparing
\nClarksdale students for the next MathCounts competition at UM,
\nscheduled Feb. 20.\n<\/p>\n

\nCrawford said the teachers and parents of the students are grateful for
\nUM’s involvement and support of mathematics education there. Activities
\ninclude after-school tutorials and math sessions, classroom
\ninstruction, “Math’s Cool” video-based instruction and peer tutoring.\n<\/p>\n

\n“Through the various math programs that Ole Miss offers, these
\ncompetitions and activities have helped our students achieve math goals
\nthroughout the year,” Crawford said. “Students are studying more and
\nreally paying attention to math. Their test scores are proficient or
\nadvanced, they are mastering math objectives and goals, and they are
\nable to effectively communicate math concepts.”\n<\/p>\n

\nJohn O’Haver, director of the Center for Mathematics and Science
\nEducation, said the middle-school years are when many students lose
\ninterest in mathematics and lag behind in performance. “The center
\noperates on the belief that retaining student interest through programs
\nlike MathCounts is a critical component to improving mathematics
\neducation in Mississippi.”\n<\/p>\n

\nMathCounts is sponsored across the country by the National
\nSociety of Professional Engineers and locally by the Mississippi
\nEngineering Society. The northeast and northwest Mississippi regional
\nco-coordinators are O’Haver; Maxine Woolsey, education outreach
\nspecialist in the School of Engineering; and Sam DeLeeuw, professor
\nemeritus of civil engineering.\n<\/p>\n

\nDeLeeuw, who has worked with MathCounts at UM for 27 years, said he is
\ngrateful for his involvement with the program. “Seeing the students’
\nsmiles as they are recognized for their achievements has truly been
\nenjoyable for me. Knowing that the university has received positive
\nexposure for its involvement in the program is also gratifying.”\n<\/p>\n

\nFour-member teams of seventh- and eighth-graders representing about 20
\nschools will participate in the written phase of the upcoming
\ncompetition at UM. Two concurrent afternoon sessions of oral
\ncompetition are open to the public, followed by an awards ceremony
\nrecognizing individual and team winners.\n<\/p>\n

\n“This semester, we plan on taking a much more direct approach, visiting
\nthe schools as much as possible,” Myles said. “We believe our kids have
\nwhat it takes to win the entire competition at both the regional and
\nstate levels.”\n<\/p>\n

\nMaterials are being shipped to all public, private and parochial
\nschools with a seventh and\/or eighth grade and every school that
\nparticipated in the 2008-2009 program. Ole Miss engineering students
\nare available to help teachers coach and tutor students wishing to
\nparticipate.\n<\/p>\n
