Selection is based on exceptional leadership,<br \/>\nacademic records and a commitment to pursue a bachelor&#8217;s degree in<br \/>\nPublic Policy Leadership.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n&#8220;This is our fifth year offering<br \/>\nthe scholarships, and it&#8217;s very difficult to make the decisions since<br \/>\nwe have a strong application file,&#8221; said William Gottshall, executive<br \/>\ndirector of the Lott Institute. &#8220;We are proud of these young adults and<br \/>\nlook forward to watching them grow academically on campus.&#8221; \u00a0 \u00a0 \n<\/p>\n<p>\nThe institute provides an intellectual community of faculty and<br \/>\nstudents designed to turn ideas into action. Programming includes many<br \/>\nopportunities for the scholars to meet and interact with public leaders<br \/>\nand participate in public programs in this country and abroad.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nThe new Lott Scholars are Morgan Renee Carter of Pascagoula,<br \/>\nMolly Hunter Harris of East Greenwich, R.I., Charles Shelby &#8220;CJ&#8221;<br \/>\nJenkins of Oxford, Charles &#8220;Justin&#8221; Sanders of Madison, and Hunter Owen<br \/>\nNicholson and Sarah Key Robinson, both of Brandon.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nCarter&#8217;s career goal is to work in the nonprofit sector,<br \/>\npossibly as head of a large humanitarian agency. She graduated from<br \/>\nResurrection Catholic High School, where her honors included Rotary<br \/>\nClub Student of the Month, Who&#8217;s Who Among American High School<br \/>\nStudents, Most Effective Witness in Mock Trial and Outstanding Defense<br \/>\nAttorney in Model United Nations. She was chosen senior class president<br \/>\nand served as captain of the school&#8217;s soccer, tennis and volleyball<br \/>\nteams. Her community service included mission trips to Mexico and<br \/>\nvolunteer work with Habitat for Humanity, Our Daily Bread Soup Kitchen,<br \/>\nMcKenzie Place Women&#8217;s Shelter and the Salvation Army.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nHarris plans to attend law school in preparation to be a<br \/>\ncriminal prosecuting attorney. At Greenwich High School, she received<br \/>\nthe Foreign Ambassadors Award in Latin, Outstanding Witness Award,<br \/>\nExcellent Lawyer Award and Presidential Award of Excellence. She served<br \/>\nas captain of the Mock Trial Team and as an officer for Class Council<br \/>\nand the National Honor Society. She participated in the Academic<br \/>\nDecathlon, Gay Straight Alliance and Latin Club. Her community service<br \/>\nincluded Volunteers in Mission, Christ Community Kitchen and McCauley<br \/>\nHouse Soup Kitchen.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nJenkins plans a double major in public policy leadership and<br \/>\ncivil engineering. After an early career as a civil engineer, he hopes<br \/>\nto enter politics. A graduate of Oxford High School, he was a National<br \/>\nMerit Finalist and placed in the 91st and 93rd percentile in the<br \/>\nNational German Exam. He was a member of the OHS Band, Mississippi<br \/>\nLions All-State Band and Northeast Honor Band. He was rated superior in<br \/>\nsolo and sight reading by the Mississippi Music Teachers Association.<br \/>\nHe was a member of the OHS baseball team and belonged to the National<br \/>\nHonor Society and Mu Alpha Theta mathematics honorary. His community<br \/>\nservice included working with St. Peter&#8217;s Episcopal Youth Community and<br \/>\nvolunteering for retirement home visitation and algebra tutoring.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nNicholson, a graduate of Brandon High School, plans to attend<br \/>\nlaw school and practice law, and eventually run for public office. He<br \/>\nwas elected Mr. BHS and inducted into the school&#8217;s Hall of Fame. He was<br \/>\nnamed Rankin County Student of the Month and chosen Best Actor by the<br \/>\nThespians. An Eagle Scout, he was a delegate to the U.S. Senate Youth<br \/>\nProgram and served two years as president of his class. A member of the<br \/>\nNational Honor Society and Beta Club, he was featured in Portico<br \/>\nMagazine among 25 Students Who Will Change the World. In community<br \/>\nservice, he was a worship leader and retreat leader at Crossgates<br \/>\nUnited Methodist Church and a member of the Mayor&#8217;s Youth Council, as<br \/>\nwell as a volunteer with the Red Cross Shelter Phone Bank and Katrina<br \/>\nRelief.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nRobinson graduated from East Rankin Academy. She plans to attend<br \/>\nlaw school. At ERA, she was an Honor Student, member of the ACT<br \/>\nAcademic Team and a state winner in Academic Betterment Competition.<br \/>\nShe served as president of both the Student Council and Mu Alpha Theta<br \/>\nand participated in varsity basketball, varsity cheerleading and<br \/>\ntheater. She attended UM&#8217;s Trent Lott Leadership Institute for High<br \/>\nSchool Students. Her community service included working with the Shiloh<br \/>\nUnited Methodist youth group and mission team and volunteering with<br \/>\nHabitat for Humanity, Veterans Day Mission Project, Make-A-Wish<br \/>\nFoundation, Hurricane Relief and Angel Tree.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nSanders, a National Merit Semifinalist, graduated from Madison<br \/>\nCentral High School. While he has long been interested in a political<br \/>\ncareer, he says he&#8217;s &#8220;very fond of international politics and intrigued<br \/>\nby the infinite possibilities in the world of international relations.&#8221;<br \/>\nHe was co-captain of his school&#8217;s Academic Decathlon Team, which placed<br \/>\nfirst in state competition and first runner-up in the national<br \/>\ndivision. In individual ADT awards, he received five gold, two silver<br \/>\nand one bronze. He was a member of the state champion Mississippi<br \/>\nEconomic Challenge Team &#8211; David Ricardo Division. He was selected for<br \/>\nadvanced competition in sociology and behavioral sciences at the<br \/>\nMississippi Regional Science Fair. He served on his school&#8217;s newspaper<br \/>\nstaff and was a member of the Government Club and Speech and Debate<br \/>\nClub. He participated in YMCA Youth Legislature, Mississippi Model<br \/>\nSecurity Council and Hugh O&#8217;Brien Youth Leadership Conference.
