{"id":1404,"date":"2009-11-05T16:12:26","date_gmt":"2009-11-05T22:12:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ezing.me\/transfer\/?p=1404"},"modified":"2014-09-23T08:35:57","modified_gmt":"2014-09-23T13:35:57","slug":"ornament","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/ornament\/","title":{"rendered":"University Museum Releases 2009 Collectible Holiday Keepsake"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>OXFORD, Miss. &#8211; Just in time for the holidays, the University of<br \/>\nMississippi Museum has released its 2009 collectible keepsake, this<br \/>\nyear commemorating the life work of renowned folk artist and Lafayette<br \/>\nCounty native Theora Hamblett.<\/p>\n<div style=\"border: 1px solid #000000; margin: 5px; padding: 5px; width: 400px; float: left; background-color: #ffffff\" class=\"jce?caption\">\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/ezing.me\/transfer\/wp-content\/uploads\/stories\/museumkeepsake09.jpg\" alt=\"museumkeepsake09.jpg\" style=\"margin: 0pt; float: left; width: 400px; height: 271px\" title=\"museumkeepsake09.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"271\" \/><\/p>\n<div style=\"color: #000000; text-align: center; clear: both\" class=\"jce?caption?text\">\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\nThe one-of-a-kind keepsake depicts Oxford&#8217;s historic Theora Hamblett<br \/>\nHouse where the self-taught, primitive artist created her signature oil<br \/>\npaintings. \u00a0Produced by a photo chemical etching process, the<br \/>\ngold-plated collectible can be purchased at the museum&#8217;s gift shop for<br \/>\n$15 plus tax and shipped for an additional $5.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n&#8220;The<br \/>\ncollectible keepsake is a great tradition started by the museum in 2001<br \/>\nas a way to commemorate specific structures important to the city of<br \/>\nOxford, the University of Mississippi and Lafayette County as a means<br \/>\nto promote the general concept of historic preservation,&#8221; said William<br \/>\nAndrews, director of University Museum and Historic Houses. \u00a0&#8220;These are<br \/>\nvery popular gifts that people enjoy giving and receiving because they<br \/>\nrepresent our appreciation for cultural heritage.&#8221;\n<\/p>\n<p>\nDesigned and built circa 1872 by Swedish immigrant G.M.<br \/>\nTorgerson, the house on Van Buren Avenue was purchased by Hamblett in<br \/>\n1939. \u00a0To generate income, she rented space to college students and<br \/>\nnewlyweds but later converted the four apartments into her studio.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nThe structure was an example of Carpenter Gothic architecture,<br \/>\nbut the top of the house burned in 1929 and was rebuilt with a typical<br \/>\n1930s eave, said Margaret Fancher, owner of the house since August 1977.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n&#8220;I think it&#8217;s great the museum chose the Theora Hamblett House<br \/>\nfor the 2009 collectible keepsake,&#8221; Fancher said. \u00a0&#8220;There are many<br \/>\nantebellum and Victorian houses in Oxford, but what makes this house<br \/>\nspecial is this is where Theora Hamblett did her paintings.&#8221;\n<\/p>\n<p>\nThe museum is in the midst of planning a traveling exhibit to<br \/>\nshowcase Hamblett&#8217;s original paintings, most of which she willed to the<br \/>\nuniversity before her death in 1977, Andrews said.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n&#8220;We thought this would be a good way to commemorate her (Hamblett&#8217;s)<br \/>\npresence in Oxford and celebrate her reputation as a national folk<br \/>\nartist and visionary figure,&#8221; Andrews said.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nPrevious University Museum collectibles include the Skipwith<br \/>\nHouse (which was also designed by Torgerson), the Brandt Memory House,<br \/>\nLyceum, Ventress Hall, Barnard Observatory, Lafayette County<br \/>\nCourthouse, Rowan Oak and Oxford City Hall.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nThe complete nine-piece set of collectible keepsakes is also<br \/>\navailable for $120 plus tax and an additional fee for shipping.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nThe University Museum Gift Shop is open 9:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.<br \/>\nTuesdays through Saturdays and 1-4:30 p.m. Sundays.
