\nDeliveries set for Nov. 19<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nOXFORD,
\nMiss. – With the spirit of giving in mind, University of Mississippi
\nfaculty, staff and students are again participating in the annual
\n“Adopt-A-Basket” program to provide Thanksgiving dinners for
\nfamilies in the Oxford area.\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nDonations
\nof specific nonperishable food items, as well as gift cards, are needed
\nso that more than 200 baskets can be delivered Nov. 19.\n<\/p>\n

\n“For
\nthe past four years, students, faculty and staff have worked together to
\ngive to the community through donating to Adopt-a-Basket,” said
\nValeria Ross, assistant dean of students for multicultural affairs and
\nvolunteer services. “Over the tenure of this event, more than 800
\nbaskets have been donated to local Lafayette-Oxford families, and it has
\nbecome an anticipated event by those who donate baskets and volunteer as
\nwell as by those who receive the baskets.”\n<\/p>\n

\nInterfaith
\nCompassion Ministries, Aramark & Catering Services and UM personnel
\nprovide names of the families who can benefit from the Thanksgiving
\nbaskets.\n<\/p>\n

\nBesides
\ndonating items and gift cards for the families, volunteers can help
\nassemble and pack boxes, Ross said. Individuals interested in
\nvolunteering their time can contact the Office of the Dean of Students at
\n662-915-7247 or vross@olemiss.edu<\/a>. Ross encourages every person who can
\ncontribute by either donating items or volunteering to help pack the
\nboxes to commit to participating in the effort. \n<\/p>\n

\nPhysical
\nPlant is donating the boxes for the items and Phi Delta Theta Fraternity
\nhas agreed for the third consecutive year to both load and deliver all
\nthe baskets.\n<\/p>\n

\nItems that
\nindividuals, student organizations or university departments should
\npurchase to fill a basket include a $35 gift card from Wal-Mart, Kroger
\nor Big Star, along with the items listed below. The gift card is given to
\nfamilies to help them buy perishables such as turkey or ham, milk, eggs,
\nbutter, rolls and pie crusts.\n<\/p>\n

\nThe list
\nof nonperishable items needed for each basket includes:

\ncorn
\n–\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a02 large cans of
\ngreen beans
\n–\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a02 cans of
\nchicken broth
\n–\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a01 can of
\ncranberry sauce
\n–\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a03 pounds of
\nsweet potatoes
\n–\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a03 pounds of
\nwhite potatoes
\n–\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a01 can of
\nsweetened condensed milk
\n–\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a05 pounds of
\nsugar
\n–\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a05 pounds of
\ncorn meal
\n–\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a01 large

\ncelery\n<\/p>\n

\nCoordinators ask that volunteers gather all the specified items and
\nrefrain from buying items not on the list. The items should be dropped
\noff at the Union Ballroom from noon to 5 p.m. Nov. 18 or 8-10:30 a.m.
\nNov. 19. \n<\/p>\n

\nThe
\nAdopt-A-Basket initiative began more than four years ago as part of the
\nMississippi Universities Service Into Caring project, involving the
