\nA student
\nin the Croft Institute for International Studies and a member of the
\nSally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College, Dayan is studying this semester
\nat the Universit\u00e9 Catholique de l’Ouest in Angers, France. Of both
\nAmerican and French ancestry, she also plans to connect with family
\nmembers who live in that part of the world. \n<\/p>\n
\nPursuing a
\ndouble major in international studies and French, Dayan is eyeing a
\ncareer in supranational politics, specifically working for an
\ninternational organization, such as the United Nations or the European
\nUnion, in areas of economic development. \n<\/p>\n
\n“Traveling is a form of learning that is unique from all others
\nbecause it involves all of our senses and challenges both our mental and
\nphysical capacities,” Dayan said.\n<\/p>\n
\nFocusing
\nthis study experience on becoming more fluent in the French language, she
\nis participating in French language classes, as well as some French
\nliterature and history classes. \n<\/p>\n
\n“One
\ngoal by the end of the semester is to be able to successfully tell jokes
\nin French,” she said. “One thing that I have learned from
\ntraveling is that humor does not transcend language and culture. It’s
\ndifficult to express my American sense of humor in French.”\n<\/p>\n
\nWhile
\nDayan’s main goals of travel are associated with education, she has
\nanother more personal reason for choosing to study in France. \n<\/p>\n
\n“I am
\nboth a French and American citizen, so I hope that living in France for
\nan extended period of time will help me grow closer to that side of my
\nheritage and also help me to further understand my identity as a dual
\ncitizen,” she said. On weekends, she plans to visit family members
\nlocated throughout France.\n<\/p>\n
\nShe also
\nexpects to spend time in the Italian cities of Florence, Siena and Rome,
\nas well as the Cinque Terre region. During her two semester breaks, she
\nplans to visit friends in Germany, as well as venture to southern Spain
\nand Ireland. \n<\/p>\n
\nDayan left
\nOxford in August with a one-way ticket to France, but she says she
\ndefinitely plans to return to Ole Miss in time for the spring semester.
\nAfter completing her undergraduate program in May 2011, she wants to
\nattend law school. \n<\/p>\n
\nDayan will
\nreceive UM credit for the courses as part of an exchange program directed
\nby the UM Study Abroad Office. These exchanges provide the opportunity
\nfor UM students to study abroad for the cost of their tuition and also
\nallow them to use their local scholarships, as well as state and federal
\nloans and grants, to help defray the cost of studying abroad.\n<\/p>\n
\nA 2007
\ngraduate of Oxford High School, Dayan is the daughter of Franck and Renee
\nDayan of Oxford.\n<\/p>\n
