OXFORD, Miss. – Many organizations struggle with the task
\nof preserving old photographs, business records and other documents,
\nbut an upcoming workshop at the University of Mississippi will provide
\nguidance and techniques for safeguarding fragile archives.

<\/p>\n
\nThe daylong session begins at 9 a.m. Dec. 4 in the J.D. Williams
\nLibrary, Room 218. Greg Johnson, associate professor and blues curator,
\ndeveloped and will teach the workshop.\n<\/p>\n
\nSpace is limited to 20 participants. A completed registration form and
\n$30 pre-registration fee must be received by Nov. 30. Each participant
\ngets a notebook of forms and helpful information, and lunch is
\nprovided. No on-site registration is available.\n<\/p>\n
\n“The workshop is for anyone in small to mid-size organizations
\nwith historical materials who wish to obtain essential information
\nabout collections acquisition, evaluation, processing, access and
\nevaluation,” said Jennifer Ford, head of archives and special
\ncollections at the J.D. Williams Library. “This is a need that should
\nbe met because we are talking about very important records and
\ndocuments that, if preserved, will be beneficial for future
\ngenerations.”\n<\/p>\n
\nThe Mississippi Historical Records Advisory Board is
\nco-sponsoring the training with funding from the National Historical
\nPublications and Records Commission and the Archival Training
\nCollaborative, a three-year program to provide affordable archival
\ntraining in Mississippi, Alabama and Louisiana. The ATC program,
\nestablished by a $280,000 grant from the Institute of Museum and
\nLibrary Services to Louisiana State University, began last year and
\nruns through June 2011.\n<\/p>\n
\nFord serves on the ATC steering committee.\n<\/p>\n
\n“This grant is important for us because it allows us to help
\ntrain people across the state to preserve at-risk materials,” said
\nJulia Rholes, UM dean of university libraries. “Through this grant, we
\ncan share our expertise and knowledge as a way to give back to the
\nstate. I think that’s terrific.”\n<\/p>\n
\nThe project was proposed after the discovery that historical
\nrepositories in the Gulf Coast region often lack personnel
\nknowledgeable in historical preservation. ATC hosted three initial
\nworkshops last spring in Baton Rouge, La., Columbus, Miss., and
\nBirmingham, Ala. Participants use free Web-based educational material,
\nwith an experienced professional available to answer questions and
\nclarify concepts.\n<\/p>\n
\nDuring the second half of the grant period, the project will
\nfocus on developing the organizational and financial structure of one
\nor more organizations to continue offering training opportunities after
\nthe grant funding ends.\n<\/p>\n
\n“This is the first workshop of this type to be held at the
\nuniversity,” Johnson said. “I have conducted similar ones at other
\ninstitutions around the state.”\n<\/p>\n
