{"id":150,"date":"2009-11-20T17:16:51","date_gmt":"2009-11-20T23:16:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ezing.me\/transfer\/?p=150"},"modified":"2014-09-23T08:35:54","modified_gmt":"2014-09-23T13:35:54","slug":"chamblee-rhodes-finalist","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/web20.olemiss.edu\/news\/wordpress\/chamblee-rhodes-finalist\/","title":{"rendered":"Fulton Native Vincent Chamblee\u00a0Finalist for Rhodes Scholarship"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>OXFORD, Miss. \u2013 Tommy Vincent \u201cVince\u201d Chamblee of Fulton interviewed Saturday (Nov. 21)<br \/>\nas a finalist for a prestigious Rhodes Scholarship.<br \/>\n<br \/><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\nA senior in<br \/>\nthe UM Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College who is on track to graduate in<br \/>\nMay 2010, Chamblee participated in the rigorous selection finals in Kansas City,<br \/>\nMo. The academic distinction is shared by some of the world\u2019s great leaders and<br \/>\nintellectuals of the past century.\n<\/p>\n<div style=\"border: 1px solid #000000; margin: 5px; padding: 5px; width: 200px; float: right; background-color: #ffffff\" class=\"jce?caption\">\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/ezing.me\/transfer\/wp-content\/uploads\/stories\/skb?1146-a-chamblee.gif\" alt=\"skb?1146-a-chamblee.gif\" style=\"border: 1px solid #000000; margin: 0pt; float: right; width: 200px; height: 301px\" title=\"skb?1146-a-chamblee.gif\" height=\"301\" width=\"200\" \/><\/p>\n<div style=\"padding: 5px; color: #000000; text-align: center; clear: both\" class=\"jce?caption?text\">\nVince Chamblee\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n<p>\nThe<br \/>\nscholarship provides an all-expenses-paid opportunity to study for two years at<br \/>\nOxford University in England, one of the world\u2019s oldest universities. It is the<br \/>\nmost coveted academic award for American undergraduates.<o:p><\/o:p>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n&#8220;Vince<br \/>\nChamblee has distinguished himself as one of our most accomplished students,\u201d<br \/>\nsaid Chancellor Dan Jones. \u201cPreviously, he received the Lott Institute\u2019s most<br \/>\nsignificant scholarship award and a Taylor Medal (the university&#8217;s highest<br \/>\nacademic award). Our entire community takes pride in his having been<br \/>\ninterviewed as a finalist in this year\u2019s Rhodes Scholarship program.\u201d<o:p><\/o:p>\n<\/p>\n<p>\nChamblee<br \/>\nwon the Barksdale Award last spring for a project that includes travel to Switzerland,<br \/>\nDubai and Tanzania for independent research into the economics of human<br \/>\ntrafficking. He also studied at the University of Edinburgh through the UM<br \/>\nStudy Abroad program and held an internship under a member of the Scottish<br \/>\nParliament.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n&#8220;Mr.<br \/>\nChamblee is an outstanding economics major,&#8221; said Jon Moen, UM chair of economics.<br \/>\n&#8220;His attention to detail in class makes teaching a pleasure. Ole Miss is<br \/>\nfortunate to have had a student like him.&#8221;\n<\/p>\n<p>\nIn<br \/>\nhis endorsement of Chamblee for the Rhodes, honors college Dean Douglass<br \/>\nSullivan-Gonzalez described him as &#8220;following a path without landmarks.<br \/>\nVince has the courage to ask substantive questions and, even more importantly,<br \/>\nto hear the difficult answers that sometimes come back to him.&#8221;<o:p><\/o:p>\n<\/p>\n<p>\nIt&#8217;s<br \/>\na path that has been instilled in Chamblee all his life, the honoree said.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\u201cMy<br \/>\ngrandfather shared this quote from Woodrow Wilson: \u2018You are not here to merely<br \/>\nmake a living; you are here in order to enable the world to live more amply,<br \/>\nwith greater vision, with a finer spirit of hope and achievement,&#8217;\u201d Chamblee<br \/>\nsaid. \u201cI hope the decisions I\u2019ve made have directed me toward that goal.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>\nChamblee<br \/>\nentered UM as a Trent Lott Leadership Institute Scholar and an honors college fellow.<br \/>\nHe received Phi Kappa Phi and Phi Beta Kappa honors and was named a Taylor<br \/>\nMedalist as a junior. He is earning bachelor\u2019s degrees in economics, public policy<br \/>\nleadership and accountancy.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nAfter<br \/>\ngraduation, Chamblee said he plans to earn an intermediary post-doctorate<br \/>\ndegree, refine his understanding at the World Bank in its social development<br \/>\nsector, then spend a year in eastern Africa. Following his time there, Chamblee<br \/>\nplans to attend law school in the United States and specialize in international<br \/>\nlaw, with a particular academic emphasis on the expansion of powers for the<br \/>\nInternational Court of Justice to policy areas concerning global<br \/>\nsustainability.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nAfter<br \/>\nhigh school, Chamblee applied to at least 17 colleges and universities,<br \/>\nspanning from as far south as Tulane University to as far north as Syracuse<br \/>\nUniversity. A week before the April 1 decision deadline, he narrowed the pool<br \/>\ndown to three: Vanderbilt University, Marquette University and Ole Miss.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n&#8220;That<br \/>\nweek, my father and I decided to take a trip to look at each of them one last<br \/>\ntime,&#8221; he said. \u201cDuring that last visit to Ole Miss, I had the opportunity<br \/>\nto meet with Dean Sullivan-Gonzalez and Dr. John Samonds from the Honors<br \/>\nCollege. I based my decision on the fact that Ole Miss genuinely believes its<br \/>\nown success is predicated upon the well-being and success of its students.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>\nThough<br \/>\nhe has always been an exceptional student, Chamblee hasn\u2019t had it easy, his<br \/>\nfather said.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\u201cVince<br \/>\nhas been blessed with a tremendous amount of determination to achieve whatever<br \/>\ngoals he sets for himself,\u201d Tommy A. Chamblee said. \u201cI remember as a fifth-grader,<br \/>\nhe had a 100 average in history and still wanted to write a five-page paper for<br \/>\nextra credit. I\u2019m very proud of him and his accomplishments.&#8221;\n<\/p>\n<p>\nChamblee<br \/>\nwould have been the second UM student in two years to win the Rhodes Scholar.<br \/>\nShadrack \u201cShad\u201d Tucker White of Sandersville won the honor in 2008. Over the<br \/>\npast 10 years, Ole Miss has produced several Rhodes Scholarship finalists, as<br \/>\nwell as five Truman, eight Goldwater and six Fulbright scholars, plus one<br \/>\nMarshall, one Udall and one Gates Cambridge scholar.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nRhodes<br \/>\nScholarships were started after the death of Cecil Rhodes in 1902 and bring<br \/>\naccomplished students from around the world to the University of Oxford.
