\"\"<\/a>OXFORD, Miss. \u2013 For the second year in a row, the University of Mississippi<\/a> is listed as one of the best and most interesting four-year colleges and universities.<\/p>\n

“Fiske Guide to Colleges 2013” (2012, Sourcebooks) is a selective, subjective and systematic look at about 300 institutions of higher learning in the U.S., Canada and Great Britain. UM is the only Mississippi institution included in the publication.<\/p>\n

“We are pleased to be recognized again by the ‘Fiske Guide to Colleges’ as one of the best universities in the country,” Chancellor Dan Jones said. “It is gratifying to see the strong academic programs at our university recognized by this authoritative source.”<\/p>\n

Colleges featured in the guide were selected with several broad principles in mind, beginning with academic quality. Other subjects considered were student body, social life, financial aid, campus setting, housing, food and extracurricular activities.<\/p>\n

The Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College<\/a>, Trent Lott Leadership Institute<\/a> and an exceptional Study Abroad<\/a> program were mentioned as highlights, along with an active social scene and students who are \u201cambitious, hospitable and well-rounded.\u201d<\/p>\n

“This underscores the tremendous progress we’ve made at the university,” said Morris Stocks, provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs. “We are pleased to be included in such a prestigious resource.”<\/p>\n

Compiled by former New York Times education editor Edward B. Fiske, the guide is the top independent voice in college admissions. Fiske served 17 years, during which time he realized that college-bound students and their families needed better information on which to base their educational choices.<\/p>\n
