OXFORD, Miss. – The University of Mississippi Faculty Woodwind Quintet is teaming up with the University of Memphis Woodwind Quintet for a March 23 performance in Nutt Auditorium.

\nThe 8 p.m. program is free and open to the public.
\nThe Ole Miss quintet features music faculty Wade Irvin on bassoon, Diane Wang on flute, Michael Rowlett on clarinet, Katherine Hopkins Piecuch on oboe and Robert Gilbert on French horn. The group has been playing together, with varying personnel, since 1994.<\/p>\n

The concert is special because “we are collaborating with the woodwind quintet from the University of Memphis – the two UM Quintets,” Rowlett said. This is the first time the two groups have performed together, he said.<\/p>\n

The Ole Miss quintet plans to perform “The Chimney of King Rene” by Darius Milhaud, and the Memphis group is slated to perform a “Woodwind Quintet” by Pulitzer prize-winning American composer Elliott Carter. The two ensembles then will combine for Divertissement, op. 36, a piece for double quintet by Emile Bernard, a 19th century French composer and organist.<\/p>\n

The groups will repeat the program March 24 at the University of Memphis. \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n
