The recital features pieces that exploit the bravura and lyrical capabilities of the trumpet, including Joseph Turrin’s “Caprice,” Carl Alexius’ “Sonatina,” Gordon Young’s “Contempora Suite,” Arthur Frackenpohl’s “Suite,” Joseph Horovitz’ “Concertino Classico for Two Trumpets” (also featuring Associate Professor of Music John Schuesselin on trumpet), Bruce Broughton’s “Oliver’s Birthday” and one of H.A. Vandercook’s “flower polkas,” “Magnolia.”<\/p>\n
Gates, UM chair and professor of music, joined the faculty in 1988 and served as director of the university’s Academic Support Center from 1999 to 2005. He has also served as an adjudicator at the National Trumpet Competition (1996, 2001-2010) and is a member of the NTC Advisory Committee.<\/p>\n
Rodgers, UM professor of music, is the head of keyboard studies and accompanying, as well as director of the university’s Community Music School. He is a founding member of the Oxford Piano Trio and performs extensively with his wife, UM music instructor Diane Wang.<\/p>\n
Gates and Rodgers have recorded two CDs, both on the Centaur Records label: “Fantasie Brilliante: A Cornet Retrospective,” released in 2005, and “Twelve Celebrated Fantaisies and Airs Varies by Joseph Jean-Baptiste \u00a0Laurent Arban,” released in 2008.<\/p>\n
