OXFORD, Miss. \u2013 Pianist Washington Garcia is set to perform as a special guest artist March 9 at the University of Mississippi.<\/p>\n

The show is slated for 8 p.m. in Nutt Auditorium, and tickets are $12 for general admission and $8 for UM students with valid IDs. They can be purchased at the UM Box Office in the Ole Miss Student Union, telephone 662-915-7411 or at the auditorium box office on the night of the performance.<\/p>\n

Garcia is the recipient of numerous artistic awards, including the Continental Airlines Sponsorship, the Presser Music Award and the Friends of Fine Arts Scholarly\/Creative Award.<\/p>\n

Ian Hominick, UM associate professor of music, describes Garcia as a “very passionate pianist.”<\/p>\n

“He always gives 100 percent and his varied program promises to include something for everyone’s tastes,” Hominick said.<\/p>\n

Garcia began studying and performing music when he was 6 and soon began playing at Ecuador’s cultural centers. He continued his studies and earned a bachelor’s degree at Ecuador’s National Conservatory of Music and master’s and doctoral degrees at Johns Hopkins University. At 25, he was the youngest Latin American to receive a doctoral degree in piano performance from Johns Hopkins.<\/p>\n

In his recital, Garcia plans to perform works by Bach, Haydn, Gershwin, Chopin and Ginastera.<\/p>\n
