OXFORD,
\nMiss. – Duane D. Miller, Van Vleet Professor of Medicinal Chemistry and
\nassociate dean at the University of Tennessee College of Pharmacy, is
\nto deliver the fifth annual Ronald F. Borne Distinguished Lecture in
\nMedicinal Chemistry Tuesday (March 31) at the University of Mississippi.<\/p>\n

He
\nwill lecture on “Discovery of Tissue – Selective Nonsteroidal
\nAndrogens” at 11 a.m. in Centennial Auditorium of the Thad Cochran
\nResearch Center. The lecture, sponsored by the Department of Medicinal
\nChemistry in the UM School of Pharmacy, is free and open to the public.<\/p>\n

Miller
\nco-discovered a new class of drugs, selective androgen receptor
\nmodulators, which have the potential to treat muscle wasting and other
\nmusculoskeletal conditions. His research program has been continuously
\nfunded by the National Institutes of Health since 1970. He has
\npublished more than 250 papers, is listed as an inventor on at least 13
\npatents and has presented more than 80 invited lectures. In 2008,
\nMiller was inducted into the American Chemical Society’s Medicinal
\nChemistry Hall of Fame.<\/p>\n


“Dr. Miller is an icon in the field of medicinal chemistry,” said Stephen J. Cutler, chair of the medicinal chemistry department. “His influence on the field spreads all over the world, primarily through his training of Ph.D. students and postdoctoral associates, as well as his development of novel medicines.”<\/p>\n

The annual lecture honors longtime faculty member Ronald F. Borne for his contributions to the department, where he was a professor and chair. He also served as the university’s acting associate vice chancellor for research and acting dean of the Graduate School in 1985-86, interim associate vice chancellor for research in 1997-98 and interim vice chancellor for research in 1998-2001. He retired from the university in 2004.<\/p>\n

Borne was a favorite of students for many years and has been recognized several times for teaching excellence. He received the university’s 1972 Elsie M. Hood Teacher of the Year Award, the 1996 Faculty Achievement Award and the 1992 Mississippi Professor of the Year Award.<\/p>\n
