Nancy and George Byers<\/p><\/div>\n

As an entering freshman at the University of Mississippi, George Byers (BA 69, MS 75) was undecided about what field of study he wanted to pursue. Then he met John G. Douglas, then chair and professor of geology and geological engineering.<\/p>\n

\u201cDr. Douglas\u2019 global experience as a petroleum geologist, his personal attention to students and his dignity as a gentleman all struck me just the right way,\u201d said Byers, vice president of government and community relations for Rare Element Resources in Lakewood, Colo. \u201cHe encouraged us to follow his profession, and kept a sense of humor about the classroom and our work that we appreciated.\u201d<\/p>\n

Byers graduated from Ole Miss with a B.A. in geology and Spanish, and with a Regular Army commission through ROTC as an infantry officer. After graduation from Airborne and Ranger schools, he served in the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, in Vietnam as an infantry officer and Pathfinder Detachment commander in 1970-71, and then back to Fort Bragg for more than two years at the 18th Airborne Corps headquarters.\u201cI returned to Ole Miss in the spring semester of 1974 and got quite a few hours of geology and geological engineering, but finished with a master\u2019s of urban and regional planning in 1975,\u201d Byers said. \u201cNancy (Byers\u2019 wife) and I became reacquainted with John and (his wife) Violet, when I returned to Ole Miss for grad school.\u201d<\/p>\n

In acknowledgment of Douglas\u2019 impact upon his life and career, the Byers began contributing to the John and Violet Douglas Endowment for Geology and Geological Engineering. Their combined donations total about $34,000 since their initial gift seven years ago.<\/p>\n

\u201cI became aware of the endowment thanks to Cathy Grace (UM geology lecturer) and Greg Easson, who was chair of the department when we made our first contribution,\u201d Byers said. \u201cThe instruction at Ole Miss taught me the importance of being precise and believing in your instruments and technology. This is something I learned as a graduate student investigating heavy mineral concentrations. The experience at summer geology camp in Colorado in 1968 was a significant factor in my decision to work in the American West.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Byers\u2019 generosity is both known and appreciated by those within the geology and geological engineering department.<\/p>\n

\u201cGeorge has not only been excellent financial help, he has also been very instrumental in helping students find jobs,\u201d said Easson, director of the Mississippi Mineral Resources Institute and geology professor at UM. \u201cHe has provided his professional contacts\u2019 phone numbers to students and told them to use his name in their interviews. At least 10 students have obtained employment in the mining industry through George\u2019s influence.\u201d<\/p>\n

Noting his service on both the UM School of Engineering advisory board and MMRI board, Grace agreed with Easson\u2019s assessment of Byers\u2019 involvement and support.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s very, very generous in giving of himself to our students whenever he visits here,\u201d she said. \u201cGeorge is a wonderful friend of the geology department and, I\u2019m pleased to say, mine as well.\u201d<\/p>\n

Following Douglas\u2019 mentorship and encouragement, Byers began a more than 37-year career in the minerals and energy industries. Now he is part of Rare Element Resources\u2019 effort to develop the next world-class rare earth district in the Bear Lodge Mountains of northeast Wyoming.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis high-grade, critical rare earth project will become only the second primary rare earth in the Western Hemisphere and only the third non-China mine of its type in the world when production begins in 2016,\u201d Byers said. \u201cOle Miss geology and geological engineering summer field camp students have been briefed and given site tours of our Bear Lodge Project over the last several summers. Their summer field camp at the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology is in the South Dakota Black Hills, only a few miles from our most unique mining project, which truly has national and international geopolitical importance.\u201d<\/p>\n

Prior to working for Rare Element Resources, Byers served as vice president of regulatory affairs at the coal mining affiliate of Public Service Co. of New Mexico, and for 17 years was vice president of public affairs and communications for Santa Fe Pacific Gold Corp. prior to its acquisition by Newmont Mining Corp. He has also held executive positions with Newmont Gold Co. and in the uranium industry with Rio Algom Mining and with Cameco Corp.\u2019s U.S. uranium production unit. During his career, he has been called to testify to various congressional committees more than 20 times.<\/p>\n

While with Cameco, he was seconded as vice president of New Mexico site development and government relations for Louisiana Energy Services, where he successfully built the case for a European-U.S. consortium to site and build the first commercial gas centrifuge uranium enrichment facility in the Western Hemisphere. This critical $3 billion facility is now in commercial operation and is the first major U.S. nuclear fuel cycle facility to be licensed by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission in more than 29 years.<\/p>\n

A trustee and 2009 president of the Northwest Mining Association, Byers is a recipient of NWMA\u2019s 2010 President\u2019s Award and its 2011 Life Member Award.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe two awards from the Northwest Mining Association are the achievements I value the most,\u201d he said. \u201cNWMA is a 118-year-old, 2,300-member nonprofit, nonpartisan national trade association that represents the hard rock mining industry with members in 43 states, nine Canadian provinces or territories and six other countries.\u201d<\/p>\n

Byers also serves on the board of directors of the Mountain States Legal Foundation and the Citizens\u2019 Alliance for Responsible Energy and the government affairs board of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration. He is a past board member of the New Mexico, Nevada and California Mining associations.<\/p>\n

When not working, Byers said he enjoys golf, hiking the Rockies, downhill skiing and snorkeling.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe also like getting together with the Ole Miss alums here in the Front Range to watch Rebel sports,\u201d said Byers, who lives with his wife in Denver. \u201cThere were 70 of us at the Blake Street [Tavern] watching the Rebels whip Pittsburgh in the BBVA Compass Bowl in January.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Byers have two adult sons, Jeff and Matt.<\/p>\n
