\nOXFORD, Miss. – U.S. Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), a former
\nVietnam POW and candidate for the 2000 Republican
\npresidential nomination, visits the University of
\nMississippi Nov. 18 for a public forum.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n Sponsored by the Trent Lott Leadership Institute
\nLecture Series, McCain’s 3 p.m. address takes place
\nin the Ford Center for the Performing Arts. He is
\nexpected to discuss current affairs, followed by a
\nquestion-and-answer session. The presentation and a
\nfollowing reception are free and open to the
\npublic.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n


“Sen. McCain brings a diverse perspective to
\nnational issues,” said William Gottshall, executive
\ndirector of the Lott Institute. “He’s a man of
\nindependent thinking, and he creates thought
\nprovoking solutions to current issues.”
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n After graduating from the U.S. Naval Academy in
\n1958, McCain began his career as a naval aviator.
\nIn 1982, he was elected to Congress, representing
\nwhat was then the first congressional district of
\nArizona. In 1986, he was elected to the United
\nStates Senate to take the seat held by Barry
\nGoldwater.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n McCain ran unsuccessfully for the Republican
\npresidential nomination in 2000. The senior senator
\nfrom Arizona, he chairs the Senate Committee on
\nIndian Affairs and serves on the Armed Services,
\nCommerce, Science and Transportation committees.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n “We’re excited to bring a national figure to the
\nOle Miss campus,” said Chancellor Robert Khayat.
\n“It’s a wonderful opportunity for our students to
\nbe able to have dialogue with such an inspirational
\nleader.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n While at UM, McCain also plans to meet with the new
\nLott Leadership Scholars and with students in the
\nSally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n
