OXFORD, Miss. – The war on terrorism was the focus of an
\naddress by U.S. Sen. John McCain Friday afternoon at the
\nUniversity of Mississippi’s Ford Center for Performing
\nArts.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n Winning the war on terrorism requires America to
\nreach two specific goals, McCain said. First,
\nensure a stable Iraq, and more importantly,
\ndiminish the ideological divide separating Muslim
\nextremists from true Islamic believers.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n “This is a titanic struggle,” McCain told the
\nstanding room-only crowd. “We have to change the
\nminds and hearts of the extremists, and prove to
\nthem that democracy can bring hope and
\nopportunities.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n


McCain, the senior senator from Arizona, admitted
\nmistakes have been made in the war in Iraq, but he
\nadded that mistakes are always made in times of
\nbattle. He said America is making progress in the
\nwar, despite the daily setbacks.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n “We didn’t choose this battle,” McCain said. “The
\nterrorists chose us on 9\/11.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n In regard to withdrawing American forces from Iraq,
\nMcCain said setting a timeline for removal would
\nonly allow the insurgents to sit back and wait. “If
\nwe fail in Iraq, the consequences will be
\ncatastrophic,” said McCain. “We can’t leave until
\nthe Iraqis can govern for themselves.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n Visiting UM’s Oxford campus for the first time,
\nMcCain spoke as part of the inaugural Trent Lott
\nLeadership Institute Lecture Series. As he walked
\nonto the stage to make his address, he received a
\nroaring standing ovation from the audience, which
\nincluded some 40 UM Naval ROTC cadets.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n “Today, we celebrate leadership here at Ole Miss,”
\nsaid Chancellor Robert Khayat. “This is a wonderful
\nopportunity for our students to be able to have
\ndialogue with one of the world’s most distinguished
\nleaders.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n Before his main address, McCain was joined by Sen.
\nLott in the Ford Center’s rehearsal hall, where he
\naddressed some 50 students from the Sally McDonnell
\nBarksdale Honors College.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n “Social Security reform has failed because
\npoliticians won’t work together,” McCain told the
\nstudents. “Unless we work together for reform, you
\nwon’t be able to receive Social Security benefits
\nwhen you become eligible for retirement.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n He also discussed rebuilding the Mississippi Gulf
\nCoast devastated by Hurricane Katrina. McCain said
\nLott and Sen. Thad Cochran are working diligently
\nwith Gov. Haley Barbour to provide the funds for
\nthat restoration.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n “This issue is fading from public consciousness,”
\nMcCain said. “We must raise it back up.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n Lott, whose Pascagoula home was destroyed by the
\nhurricane, said it will require patience, time and
\ntenacity to rebuild. “When we look back five years
\nfrom now, south Mississippi will be better than it
\never was before,” Lott said. “I want Mississippi to
\nrise up from Katrina.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n A former Vietnam POW, McCain graduated from the
\nNaval Academy in 1958 and began his career as a
\nNaval aviator. In 1982, he was elected to Congress
\nrepresenting what was then the first congressional
\ndistrict of Arizona. In 1986, he was elected to the
\nU.S. Senate to take the seat held by Barry
\nGoldwater.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n In 2000, McCain ran unsuccessfully for the
\nRepublican nomination for president. He chairs the
\nSenate Committee on Indian Affairs and serves on
\nthe Armed Services, and Commerce, Science and
\nTransportation committees.
