OXFORD, Miss. – In searching for peace, the world could
\nbenefit by examining how the University of Mississippi
\nmoved past its racial divisions, said His Majesty King
\nAbdullah II bin Al Hussein of Jordan in a speech today on
\nthe Oxford campus.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n Sponsored by UM’s Trent Lott Leadership Institute,
\nKing Abdullah in his only public address during
\nhis visit to the United States focused on efforts
\nto promote interfaith dialogue and cross-cultural
\nunderstanding. He told the estimated 900 people in
\nattendance at the Ford Center for Performing Arts
\nthat meeting those challenges requires global
\ntolerance and dialogue.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

\n\t“Success will require our energy, our intellect and most of all – our will,” said the king. “Here at the University of Mississippi, you showed what people can do together to overcome the mistakes and divisions of the past, and move forward to a new era, a promising era for all.”\n\t<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\n Citing bombings in New York, Madrid, London,
\nRiyadh, Istanbul and the capital of Jordan, Amman,
\nKing Abdullah said the terrorists’ aims are clear:
\nThey seek to undermine public confidence in an open
\nsociety and in the rule of law.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n “Defense requires more than security measures,” His
\nMajesty said. “We must deflect the extremists’
\nefforts to drive us off the path forward.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n A follower of Islam, King Abdullah said traditional
\nMuslims reject extremist violence and hatred. To
\noppose false teachings, Jordan released the Amman
\nMessage more than a year ago, which explains the
\ntrue nature of Islam and calls for a peaceful
\ncoexistence among all human beings. The worldwide
\nOrganization of the Islamic Conference has since
\nendorsed the message.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n “The Amman Message is an all-Islamic initiative,
\nbut the road of moderation is not for Muslims
\nalone,” King Abdullah said. “All of us have a
\nresponsibility to promote the intercultural,
\ninterfaith understanding that our future depends
\non.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n U.S. Sen. Trent Lott introduced King Abdullah to
\nthe Ford Center audience as a “close friend.” Lott
\nsaid the Ole Miss campus provided an opportunity
\nfor future leaders to see and hear from one of the
\nworld’s most informative and helpful leaders. Lott
\nalso commented on the importance of understanding
\ndifferent cultures and people, just as His Majesty
\nalluded to during his address.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n “King Abdullah is a compassionate, sincere man,”
\nLott said. “He’s concerned about Mississippi and
\nthe Gulf Coast following Hurricane Katrina, and
\nhe’s contributed funds to help us rebuild.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n In regard to the Middle East, King Abdullah said
\nthe recent Palestinian elections must be respected.
\nHe said both Palestinians and Israelis are tired of
\nthe violence, and it is vital for the international
\ncommunity to support the peace process.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n “Establishing a viable, sovereign Palestinian state
\nalongside a secure Israel is the only way to put an
\nend to violence and extremism,” King Abdullah
\nsaid.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n He also called on the international community to
\nsupport the Iraqi people as they rebuild their
\ncountry. He said, “The entire world has a stake in
\na unified, stable and prosperous Iraq.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n Chancellor Robert Khayat, who had invited King
\nAbdullah to UM several years ago, welcomed the king
\nto campus. As Sen. Lott introduced Khayat to King
\nAbdullah, the king remarked that he is “a Redskins
\nfan,” alluding to Khayat’s earlier career as a
\nkicker for the NFL team.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n Before his speech, King Abdullah met backstage with
\nUM students and faculty members from Jordan and
\ngroups of students from the Sally McDonnell
\nBarksdale Honors College and Lott Leadership
\nInstitute. Three Jordanian graduate students showed
\nthe king poster presentations of their research
\nprojects in electrical engineering, civil
\nengineering and physical acoustics.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n A 43rd generation direct descendent of the Prophet
\nMuhammad, King Abdullah assumed his constitutional
\npowers as Monarch of Jordan on Feb. 7, 1999, the
\nday his father, the late King Hussein, died.
