UM photo by Harry Briscoe.\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>OXFORD, Miss. &#8211; Since its founding in 1848, the University<br \/>\nof Mississippi has nurtured state and national leaders, and<br \/>\nthat tradition continues including special training<br \/>\nopportunities through the Trent Lott Leadership Institute.<\/span><br \/>\n<br \/><!--more--><br \/><span>Six freshmen have entered UM this fall as recipients of<br \/>\n$40,000 Lott Leadership Scholarships, which includes<br \/>\nassociation with the institute. The exceptional students<br \/>\nare chosen for the awards based on their leadership<br \/>\nability, academic performance and record of community<br \/>\nservice.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\n\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>&#8220;This scholarship ensures that Ole Miss will continue its<br \/>\nlong tradition of nurturing strong leaders for our state<br \/>\nand nation, and the caliber of these recipients proves that<br \/>\npoint,&#8221; said Chancellor Robert Khayat, who invites the Lott<br \/>\nScholars to join the Chancellor&#8217;s Leadership Class.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Scholarship recipients are Chelsea Caveny of Hattiesburg,<br \/>\nChristopher Cox of Moss Point, Richard Walters of Brandon,<br \/>\nKatie Watson of Louisville, and Alex McLelland and Matthew<br \/>\nHenry, both of Madison.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>Lott Scholars are required to pursue the university&#8217;s<br \/>\nundergraduate degree program in public policy studies,<br \/>\nwhich is the first such degree program to be offered in the<br \/>\nstate. Besides maintaining academic standards, the students<br \/>\nare expected to continue their commitment to community<br \/>\nservice. To help them balance these requirements, they are<br \/>\npaired with faculty mentors in their major fields of<br \/>\nstudy.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>&#8220;The faculty members understand that these young leaders<br \/>\nwill need guidance to help lead Mississippi and America<br \/>\ninto the future,&#8221; said Bill Gottshall, executive director<br \/>\nof the Lott Institute. &#8220;We commend each of these students<br \/>\non receiving this scholarship, and now we hope to offer<br \/>\nthem the education, skills and experience needed to endure<br \/>\nas tomorrow&#8217;s leaders.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>At Oak Grove High School, Caveny served as student body<br \/>\npresident, forensics team tournament director and dance<br \/>\nteam captain. A member of the Red Cross Club and National<br \/>\nHonor Society, she was a delegate to Girls State and was<br \/>\none of two Mississippi senators there chosen to serve at<br \/>\nGirls Nation. Her awards include a finalist for the Youth<br \/>\nAdvocate of the Year and a National Forensics League<br \/>\nAll-American. A member of St. Thomas Catholic Church, her<br \/>\ncommunity service included traveling to Saltillo, Mexico,<br \/>\nas a missionary and volunteering for Vacation Bible<br \/>\nSchool.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>At Moss Point High School, Cox served as student council<br \/>\npresident, class president and drum major. An honor roll<br \/>\nstudent, he was selected for the American Legion Boys State<br \/>\nand American Legion Boys Nation. His honors also include<br \/>\nrunner-up for governor of Boys State, and he was a nominee<br \/>\nfor president of Boys Nation. His community service<br \/>\nincluded volunteering at the local nursing home and for<br \/>\nCompassionate Friends, Environment Clean Up, Big Brothers<br \/>\nof America and Hurricane Katrina relief.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>At Madison Central High School, McLelland served as student<br \/>\nbody president, vice president and representative. An honor<br \/>\nroll student, he was elected Boys State governor, served on<br \/>\nthe Mayor&#8217;s Youth Council and paged for Gov. Haley Barbour.<br \/>\nHis honors include the Principal&#8217;s Leadership Award and the<br \/>\nMadison Central Citizenship Award. A member of Ridgecrest<br \/>\nBaptist Church, he volunteered for mission trips to<br \/>\nMontana, Wyoming and the Dominican Republic. He also<br \/>\nparticipated in Relay for Life, Walk for Diabetes,<br \/>\nMississippi Food for Families campaign and Make-A-Wish<br \/>\nFoundation fundraiser.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>At Jackson Preparatory School, Henry served as editor of<br \/>\nthe school&#8217;s newspaper, captain of the debate team, vice<br \/>\npresident of the student body and drum major. A National<br \/>\nHonor Society member, he was chosen state president of the<br \/>\nJunior Classical League, chaired the Mississippi Governor&#8217;s<br \/>\nSchool and was a member of the Junior Engineers of Tomorrow<br \/>\nSociety. His honors include National Merit Semifinalist and<br \/>\nClassical Heritage Scholar. A member of Christ United<br \/>\nMethodist Church, he was a frequent volunteer in community<br \/>\nservice, including the March of Dimes and Special<br \/>\nOlympics.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>At Northwest Rankin High School, Walters was secretary of<br \/>\nthe Fellowship of Jewish People, public affairs<br \/>\nrepresentative of the executive council and president of<br \/>\nthe Beta Club. An honor roll student, he served on the<br \/>\nBoard of Governors for Youth Leadership Jackson. His awards<br \/>\ninclude maxima cum laude of the national Latin exam and<br \/>\nmultiple Student of the Month honors. A member of St. Pauls<br \/>\nCatholic Church, his community service included chairing<br \/>\nthe United Way Youth Donor Investment Committee and<br \/>\nparticipating in Hurricane Katrina relief. He also<br \/>\nvolunteered for work with the American Red Cross, Salvation<br \/>\nArmy, Relay for Life, Habitat for Humanity and the Blair E.<br \/>\nBatson Children&#8217;s Hospital.<br \/>\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<span>At Winston Academy, Watson served as co-editor of the<br \/>\nGazette, vice president of the student body and captain of<br \/>\nthe Fellowship of Christian Athletes. A member of the<br \/>\nNational Honor Society, she was a Mississippi Governor&#8217;s<br \/>\nSchool Scholar and a STAR Student. Her other honors include<br \/>\nwinner of the U.S. Achievement Academy English Merit Award,<br \/>\nPrudential Spirit of Community Awards Honoree and<br \/>\nPresident&#8217;s Volunteer Service Award.
