OXFORD, Miss. – Since its founding in 1848, the University
\nof Mississippi has nurtured state and national leaders, and
\nthat tradition continues including special training
\nopportunities through the Trent Lott Leadership Institute.<\/span>
\n

Six freshmen have entered UM this fall as recipients of
\n$40,000 Lott Leadership Scholarships, which includes
\nassociation with the institute. The exceptional students
\nare chosen for the awards based on their leadership
\nability, academic performance and record of community
\nservice.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\u00a0\n<\/p>\n

\n“This scholarship ensures that Ole Miss will continue its
\nlong tradition of nurturing strong leaders for our state
\nand nation, and the caliber of these recipients proves that
\npoint,” said Chancellor Robert Khayat, who invites the Lott
\nScholars to join the Chancellor’s Leadership Class.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nScholarship recipients are Chelsea Caveny of Hattiesburg,
\nChristopher Cox of Moss Point, Richard Walters of Brandon,
\nKatie Watson of Louisville, and Alex McLelland and Matthew
\nHenry, both of Madison.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nLott Scholars are required to pursue the university’s
\nundergraduate degree program in public policy studies,
\nwhich is the first such degree program to be offered in the
\nstate. Besides maintaining academic standards, the students
\nare expected to continue their commitment to community
\nservice. To help them balance these requirements, they are
\npaired with faculty mentors in their major fields of
\nstudy.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“The faculty members understand that these young leaders
\nwill need guidance to help lead Mississippi and America
\ninto the future,” said Bill Gottshall, executive director
\nof the Lott Institute. “We commend each of these students
\non receiving this scholarship, and now we hope to offer
\nthem the education, skills and experience needed to endure
\nas tomorrow’s leaders.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nAt Oak Grove High School, Caveny served as student body
\npresident, forensics team tournament director and dance
\nteam captain. A member of the Red Cross Club and National
\nHonor Society, she was a delegate to Girls State and was
\none of two Mississippi senators there chosen to serve at
\nGirls Nation. Her awards include a finalist for the Youth
\nAdvocate of the Year and a National Forensics League
\nAll-American. A member of St. Thomas Catholic Church, her
\ncommunity service included traveling to Saltillo, Mexico,
\nas a missionary and volunteering for Vacation Bible
\nSchool.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nAt Moss Point High School, Cox served as student council
\npresident, class president and drum major. An honor roll
\nstudent, he was selected for the American Legion Boys State
\nand American Legion Boys Nation. His honors also include
\nrunner-up for governor of Boys State, and he was a nominee
\nfor president of Boys Nation. His community service
\nincluded volunteering at the local nursing home and for
\nCompassionate Friends, Environment Clean Up, Big Brothers
\nof America and Hurricane Katrina relief.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nAt Madison Central High School, McLelland served as student
\nbody president, vice president and representative. An honor
\nroll student, he was elected Boys State governor, served on
\nthe Mayor’s Youth Council and paged for Gov. Haley Barbour.
\nHis honors include the Principal’s Leadership Award and the
\nMadison Central Citizenship Award. A member of Ridgecrest
\nBaptist Church, he volunteered for mission trips to
\nMontana, Wyoming and the Dominican Republic. He also
\nparticipated in Relay for Life, Walk for Diabetes,
\nMississippi Food for Families campaign and Make-A-Wish
\nFoundation fundraiser.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nAt Jackson Preparatory School, Henry served as editor of
\nthe school’s newspaper, captain of the debate team, vice
\npresident of the student body and drum major. A National
\nHonor Society member, he was chosen state president of the
\nJunior Classical League, chaired the Mississippi Governor’s
\nSchool and was a member of the Junior Engineers of Tomorrow
\nSociety. His honors include National Merit Semifinalist and
\nClassical Heritage Scholar. A member of Christ United
\nMethodist Church, he was a frequent volunteer in community
\nservice, including the March of Dimes and Special
\nOlympics.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nAt Northwest Rankin High School, Walters was secretary of
\nthe Fellowship of Jewish People, public affairs
\nrepresentative of the executive council and president of
\nthe Beta Club. An honor roll student, he served on the
\nBoard of Governors for Youth Leadership Jackson. His awards
\ninclude maxima cum laude of the national Latin exam and
\nmultiple Student of the Month honors. A member of St. Pauls
\nCatholic Church, his community service included chairing
\nthe United Way Youth Donor Investment Committee and
\nparticipating in Hurricane Katrina relief. He also
\nvolunteered for work with the American Red Cross, Salvation
\nArmy, Relay for Life, Habitat for Humanity and the Blair E.
\nBatson Children’s Hospital.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nAt Winston Academy, Watson served as co-editor of the
\nGazette, vice president of the student body and captain of
\nthe Fellowship of Christian Athletes. A member of the
\nNational Honor Society, she was a Mississippi Governor’s
\nSchool Scholar and a STAR Student. Her other honors include
\nwinner of the U.S. Achievement Academy English Merit Award,
\nPrudential Spirit of Community Awards Honoree and
\nPresident’s Volunteer Service Award. A member of First
\nBaptist Church, she volunteered for Vacation Bible School;
\nmission work in Tennessee, Georgia, Massachusetts and
\nTexas; Relay for Life and Mississippi Food Network.
