\nOXFORD, Miss. – The School of Pharmacy welcomed its Doctor
\nof Pharmacy class of 2011 recently with its annual white
\ncoat ceremony at the Ford Center for the Performing Arts.<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe white coat is the universal symbol of professionalism
\nin the health care professions, and the ceremony is a way
\nof formally recognizing and fostering students’ commitment
\nto professionalism, said Barbara G. Wells, dean of the
\npharmacy school.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“The white coat ceremony is a celebration that is filled
\nwith symbolism, which serves to remind students of their
\nresponsibilities to patients and to their profession,”
\nWells said. “It presents the quest for professionalism as a
\nlifelong journey that begins now but is never completed.
\nThe ceremony illuminates their responsibility to work to
\nenhance the length and quality of life of patients, and it
\nalso underscores our commitment to prepare students to
\nbecome competent practitioners, leaders and change agents.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

Alice Clark, vice chancellor for research and sponsored
\nprograms, welcomed the students. Also participating in the
\nceremony were H. Joseph Byrd, associate dean for clinical
\naffairs; Marvin C. Wilson, associate dean for academic and
\nstudent affairs; Jon Jackson, president of the Pharmacy
\nStudent Body; and Michael L. Warren, clinical assistant
\nprofessor.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\u00a0\n<\/p>\n

\nThe students recited a pledge of professionalism, led by
\nJohn P. Juergens, coordinator of student professional
\ndevelopment; Jillian J. Foster, president of the
\nMississippi Society of Health-System Pharmacists; and Pearl
\nWales, treasurer of the Magnolia State Pharmaceutical
\nSociety. Students then signed a copy of the pledge and
\nreceived their coats from Wells.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nFirst professional year student Donan Boggess of Hernando
\nsaid she is excited about the upcoming year.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“I am excited to be starting on the path of becoming a
\npharmacist,” she said. “This career will give me the
\nopportunity to help others, and that is very important to
\nme. Pharmacy will also allow me to incorporate my love for
\nvolunteerism.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nMississippi students participating in the ceremony include
