\nastronomy, plans to deliver the address “The Search for
\nGravitational Waves” at 4 p.m. in the Tupelo Room of
\nBarnard Observatory. The event is free and open to the
\npublic.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n
\nDepartment of Physics and Astronomy, recently joined the
\nNational Science Foundation-sponsored Laser Interferometer
\nGravitational-wave Observatory Scientific Collaboration.
\nThe effort involves more than 500 scientists from 47
\ninstitutions worldwide whose goal is to discover the
\nexistence of gravitational waves for scientific research.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n
\nthe LIGO collaborators plan to try to detect the
\ngravitational waves, followed by an explanation about the
\nbenefits of such an accomplishment.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n
\nCavaglia said. “I believe we are on the brink of detecting
\ngravitational waves, which Einstein predicted in his Theory
\nof General Relativity. The discovery of gravitational waves
\nwill allow us to prove the existence of black holes and
\ngive us a magnitude of information about astrophysics as
\nwell.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n
\nPhysics and Astronomy to have joined the LIGO scientific
\ncollaboration,” said Thomas Marshall, UM chair and
\nprofessor of physics and astronomy. “Our membership in
\nLIGO will bring substantial benefit to our faculty and
\nstudents. Proximity to the LIGO Louisiana site with its
\nnew outreach center will also increase outreach
\nopportunities.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n
\nfaculty in 2004. He received his undergraduate degree at
\nthe University of Turin and his doctorate at the
\nInternational School for Advanced Studies in Trieste,
\nItaly. He previously taught at Tufts University in
\nMassachusetts, MIT and the University of Portsmouth in
\nEngland.
