OXFORD, Miss. – A Gulfport attorney who has excelled in the
\nareas of personal injury, products and medical malpractice
\nlitigation has been named the 2007 University of
\nMississippi School of Law Alumnus of the Year.<\/span>
\n

The annual honor was awarded to Harry R. Allen, a senior
\nmember of Allen, Vaughn, Cobb, Hood & Atkinson, P.A., at a
\nluncheon earlier this summer. Allen, who completed his law
\ndegree at UM in 1955, is listed in The Best Lawyers in
\nAmerica in his fields. He has worked out of a temporary
\noffice since Hurricane Katrina heavily damaged his firm’s
\nbuilding.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\u00a0\n<\/p>\n

\n“Harry is very deserving of this award,” said law Dean
\nSamuel M. Davis. “He served as chairman of the Lamar Order
\n(the highest level of giving among UM law alumni) this past
\nyear, and more than that, he has made a personal commitment
\nto our Law School Campaign and has been of enormous help in
\nthe campaign generally.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe award seeks to recognize someone who has been of
\noutstanding service to the law school, Davis said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nRobert T. Jackson Sr., president of the Law Alumni Chapter,
\nhas known Allen since he began practicing law in Gulfport
\n41 years ago.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Harry was there, so I’ve known him that long,” Jackson
\nsaid. “He has been, and continues to be, a very
\ndistinguished attorney. He has given generously of his time
\nfor civic matters, charitable endeavors and service to the
\nMississippi Bar Association.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nAllen, who also received his undergraduate degree from the
\nuniversity, said he was surprised by the recognition
\nbecause of the many other outstanding alumni of the law
\nschool.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“I felt particularly honored because I hold the Ole Miss
\nlaw school in such high esteem,” he said. “During the past
\n10 years under the leadership of Dean Davis, the law school
\nhas produced graduates who are exceptional lawyers. The law
\nclerks and new lawyers from Ole Miss who have been hired by
\nour firm are better equipped to practice law than any I
\nhave seen in the past.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nAllen has authored numerous published works and is a member
\nof the Mississippi, Harrison County and American bar
\nassociations, as well as the Mississippi Defense Lawyers
\nAssociation, Defense Research Institute, International
\nAssociation of Defense Counsel and Maritime Law
\nAssociation. A veteran of the U.S. Air Force, he is a
\nfellow of the Mississippi Bar Foundation and was appointed
\nas a special assistant attorney general. He also served as
\nchairman of the Mississippi Supreme Court Commission on
\nImpaired Lawyers.
