\nOXFORD, Miss. – Five University of Mississippi
\nundergraduates have been selected to receive Phi Kappa Phi
\nscholarships this fall. The awards, which range from $250 to $1,000, go to Kristen
\nConner of Carterville, Ill., Vishal Patel of Corinth, Casey
\nPhillips of Clanton, Ala., Melissa Shudak of Buffalo Grove,
\nIll., and Andrew Weeks of Ridgeland. All are members of Phi
\nKappa Phi, the nation’s oldest and largest all-discipline
\nhonor society.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n


“These students represent the honor society of Phi Kappa
\nPhi and the scholarship and character standards of the
\nUniversity of Mississippi very well,” said Ann Canty,
\nassistant provost and local Phi Kappa Phi chapter
\nsecretary. “They truly live up to Phi Kappa Phi’s motto,
\nLet the love of learning rule humanity.'”
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\u00a0\n<\/p>\n

\nThe scholarships are funded through the local chapter, said
\nLinda Chitwood, dean of the School of Applied Sciences. “We
\ntruly appreciate those who maintain active membership in
\nthe society and help us provide these scholarships to our
\nOle Miss students,” she said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nConner is a senior majoring in family and consumer sciences
\nwith an emphasis in dietetics and nutrition. She is a
\nmember of Alpha Lambda Delta academic honor society, Kappa
\nEpsilon pharmacy fraternity, Order of Omega honor society,
\nBaptist Student Union, Campus Crusade for Christ and Phi Mu
\nsorority. She has served pharmacy internships at several
\nhospitals, and her community involvement includes
\nvolunteering at the Children’s Miracle Network and Azalea
\nGardens retirement home, and in relief efforts following
\nHurricane Katrina.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nA third-year pharmacy student, Patel has served three
\nconsecutive summer internships at Walgreen’s. He holds
\nmemberships in Alpha Lambda Delta, Alpha Epsilon Delta
\npre-medical honor society, Gamma Beta Phi honor and service
\norganization, Kappa Psi pharmaceutical fraternity, the
\nAmerican Pharmacists Association and the National Community
\nPharmacists Association.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nA senior journalism major, Phillips has worked as a staff
\nreporter and photographer for UM’s student-run newspaper,
\nThe Daily Mississippian. She is on the Ole Miss Women’s
\nRifle Team and was named Great American Rifle Conference
\nOle Miss Scholar-Athlete of the Year. She has been listed
\non the SEC Academic Honor Roll and received All-Academic
\nStudent-Athlete honors from the Collegiate Rifle Coaches
\nAssociation. She has volunteered at the North American
\nMission Board and is a member of Gamma Beta Phi, the
\nNational Society of Collegiate Scholars and the Baptist
\nStudent Union Leadership Team.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nShudak’s major is medicinal chemistry, but she is also an
\naccomplished violinist. She plays in UM’s symphonic and
\nmarching bands and orchestra. Her community service
\nincludes volunteering at the Southern Hospice Organization,
\nMississippi Veterans Home, Azalea Gardens and Graceland
\nNursing Home. She is a member of Phi Theta Kappa and Alpha
\nLambda Delta academic honor societies, Kappa Epsilon
\nprofessional pharmacy fraternity and Reformed University
\nFellowship.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nWeeks is a senior biology major with a research emphasis in
\nthe ecological success of bacteria. Enrolled in UM’s Sally
\nMcDonnell Barksdale Honors College, he belongs to Beta Beta
\nBeta biology honor society, Omicron Delta Kappa leadership
\nhonor society and the honor societies of Gamma Beta, Alpha
\nLambda Delta and Order of Omega. A member of the National
\nSociety of Collegiate Scholars and Sigma Nu Fraternity, he
\nis a student affiliate of the American Chemical Society. He
\nhas volunteered with Meadowbrook Creek Service Project,
\nHunters for the Hungry Project and at Camp Hopewell.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nPhi Kappa Phi was founded in 1897. Each year the society
\ninducts more than 30,000 students, faculty, professional
\nstaff and alumni. It has chapters at nearly 300 colleges
\nand universities in North America and the Philippines.
\nMembership is by invitation to the top 10 percent of
\nseniors and graduate students, and 7.5 percent juniors.
