OXFORD, Miss. – The Mississippi Small Business Development
\nCenters headquartered at the University of Mississippi
\nrecently completed an economic impact study on small
\nbusinesses around the state and learned several key
\npoints.<\/span>
\n

“We track economic impact and what we do internally every
\nyear but we wanted an objective outside of opinion,” said
\nAssociate State Director Mike Vanderlip. “Advice alone
\ndoesn’t make a difference, but applying good management
\nprinciples, understanding what the current best practices
\nare for small business and a complete grasp of the
\nregulatory requirements make a difference.”
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\u00a0\n<\/p>\n

\nThe study looked at the financial information of small
\nbusinesses around the state that worked with the center and
\nthose that did not, then compared the information to
\ndetermine each group’s economic impact, Vanderlip said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nResults showed that MSBDC clients, in comparison to
\nnon-clients, did the following: created more jobs for
\nMississippi residents in 2006, were more likely to secure a
\nsmall business administration loan and showed steady rates
\nof sales growth.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nStephanie Noble, UM associate professor of marketing,
\noversaw the study, which involved two undergraduate
\nbusiness school students who conducted personal telephone
\nsurveys with 303 business owners.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“I was very pleased. The results speak for themselves and
\nshow the Mississippi Small Business Development Centers are
\nmaking an economic impact in the state,” Noble said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe office located at UM is MSBDC’s state headquarters, and
\nthere are nine service centers throughout the state, as
\nwell as second locations and satellite offices. They
\nprovide technical assistance to small business owners and
\nentrepreneurs throughout the state.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“We help them make the management decisions they need to
\nmake for their business to help them get better, be better
\nand stay better,” said Vanderlip. “We provide good,
\nhigh-quality, meaningful advice that the client can
\nunderstand and use.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nMSBDC is working on a number of other projects. “We are
\ndoing some work right now with the people in Kansas,
\nputting together some federal proposals to get them some
\nextra money to help them respond to the disaster they have
\nhad there,” said Vanderlip. “We are extremely blessed that
\nour national association is as strong as it is, so when
\nHurricane Katrina hit, we could pick the phone up and call
\nNorth Carolina, New York and friends in Florida and see
\nwhat they did as a response to their disasters. Whether we
\nwanted to or not, we are like the disaster experts now;
\nthere’s no way you can go through something like Katrina
\nand not be an expert.”
