\nOXFORD, Miss. – A University of Mississippi instructor has
\nbeen awarded a $4,000 grant from the Mississippi Arts
\nCommission to produce a new play.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nVeteran actor and writer George Kehoe of Oxford plans to
\nuse the funds to present “Hungry.” Kehoe’s one-actor play
\nis based on the life of Bobby Sands, an Irish Republican
\nactivist who, after a 66-day hunger strike, died in prison
\nin 1981.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n


“I am deeply thankful for this opportunity to bring to the
\nstage a subject in which I have long been interested,” said
\nKehoe, adjunct instructor in the Department of English.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\u00a0\n<\/p>\n

\n“While Irish politics, history and war are featured
\nprominently in the play, the real study is the human
\nresponse to suffering, how the soul can transcend horrific
\npain and transform itself through sacrifice.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nPerformances of “Hungry” are to be scheduled in early March
\nat the Powerhouse Theater in Oxford.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe grant is a portion of the $1 million MAC will award in
\n2007-2008 with funding from the state Legislature and the
\nNational Endowment for the Arts. Established in 1968, MAC
\nalso receives funding from the Wallace Foundation and other
\nprivate sources.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Individuals across the state continue to offer their
\nsupport to prove the value of the arts in Mississippi,”
\nsaid Malcolm White, executive director of MAC. “Their
\nparticipation in local events and activities helps to
\nensure the economic success of their community. The
\nMississippi Arts Commission is proud to support their
\nefforts.”
