OXFORD, Miss. – From understanding the history represented
\nby Westminster Abbey to meeting Eli Manning’s underwriter,
\na recent week in London proved to be a lifetime experience
\nfor six University of Mississippi School of Business
\nAdministration students.<\/span>
\n

Staff member Robert Forster led the students overseas to
\nintroduce them to the international aspects of insurance
\nand to compare the U.S. market with the model in England
\nbased on Lloyd’s of London, the world’s leading specialized
\ninsurance market.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\u00a0\n<\/p>\n

\n“I wanted to expose the students to something much bigger
\nthan they had probably ever imagined insurance could be for
\nthe purpose of inspiring them to move towards a career in
\nthe insurance industry, which may include traveling to
\nLloyd’s to place sophisticated risks,” said Forster,
\nassistant to the dean for development.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nStudents making the trip were David Coleman of Richmond,
\nVa., Stoney Ford of Rustburg, Va., Daniel Harrison of
\nMeridian, Matt Koury of Jackson, Audrey Rogers of San
\nAntonio, Texas, and Lewis Williamson of Memphis, Tenn.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe students had the opportunity to meet with attorneys –
\nincluding Bill Jones, an Ole Miss graduate who was there
\nrepresenting an insurance client – and several insurance
\nbrokers. They received firsthand exposure to the legal
\naspects of insurance from both a claims point of view and
\nunderwriting.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nRogers, a senior managerial finance major, said her
\nfavorite part of the trip was visiting the financial
\ndistrict and lunching with brokers who shared information
\nabout their jobs.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“My goal through this trip was not only to learn about
\ninsurance, gain experience and make connections, but to
\nview the industry from a truly global market,” Rogers
\nsaid.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nSome of the students actually sat in the “boxes” where the
\nunderwriting process takes place. This is where the brokers
\ncome to place the business and discuss the risks with the
\nunderwriters, persuading them to “sign the slip,” which
\nmeans assuming part of the risk.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nKoury, a senior risk and insurance major, said that he
\nespecially enjoyed visiting Lloyd’s of London and meeting
\npeople associated with the insurance industry in England.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“What I learned from the course was a lot more of the
\nreal-life business conducted in insurance, not just
\nstudying theories and definitions but actually sitting down
\nwith sample policies and going through them to understand
\nthe implications of the policy language.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nForster said this experience gave the students an
\nunderstanding of the big picture of insurance, including
\nmeeting an underwriter of the arm of former Ole Miss
\nfootball standout Manning.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe students also had the opportunity to spend time as
\ntourists in London, including visits to the National
\nGallery, British Museum and Tower of London, as well as to
\nWestminster Abbey and Wimbledon.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“One of the highlights was taking the students to Rule’s
\nRestaurant, which is one of the oldest and most famous
\nrestaurants in London; it is very upscale and a fun place
\nto go, and they got to see how business can be transacted
\nover an elegant dinner,” Forster said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nUM alumnus David White, chairman of the board of the
\nMorganWhite Group in Jackson, helped Forster with setting
\nup some of the contacts in London and supplied scholarship
\nmoney to make the trip possible for some of the students.
\nTom Quaka, another Ole Miss alum and an insurance executive
\nfrom Jackson, traveled to Oxford and visited with the
\nLondon-bound students to help prepare them for the learning
\nexperience.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“It’s a small world and the U.S. is an important financial
\npart of the Lloyd’s market. The more personal contacts that
\nthe London brokers can have with individuals in America,
\nthe greater the possibility is that business through these
\npersonal contacts will grow,” Forster said. “Several of the
\nstudents now have a dream of going back to London after
\ngraduation and working in that market.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nBoth Rogers and Koury recommend study abroad as a great
\nopportunity.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“The education of this trip surpassed not just our business
\naspirations; our experiences together in the city of London
\ncomplemented the technical learning we were exposed to,”
\nRogers said. “It was more than I expected – it was an
\nincredible experience.”
