OXFORD, Miss. – The Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing
\nprogram at the University of Mississippi has been
\nrecognized by The Atlantic Monthly magazine as one of five
\n“Up-and-Coming Programs” in the nation.<\/span>
\n

Other institutions on the list, printed in the periodical’s
\nFiction 2007 issue, are Brooklyn College, Ohio State
\nUniversity, Rutgers University at Newark and the University
\nof Wisconsin.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\u00a0\n<\/p>\n

\n“To be named in The Atlantic this way is recognition of a
\nlot of hard work on the part of our students, faculty and
\nadministration,” said David Galef, professor of English and
\nadministrator of the MFA program.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nIn his Atlantic essay “Where Great Writers Are Made,”
\njournalist and fiction author Edward J. Delaney writes,
\n“Some programs, such as Mississippi’s and Brooklyn’s, seem
\nto form around a dynamic teacher – Barry Hannah and Michael
\nCunningham, respectively.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nHannah, an acclaimed author who has won numerous awards and
\nother recognition, is a long-standing writer-in-residence
\nat the university. He serves as director of the MFA
\nprogram, which remains the only one of its kind in the
\nstate.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nIn making selections for the Atlantic list, Delaney
\npersonally visited some 30 of the nation’s 300 colleges
\nwith creative writing programs and contacted many others
\nlong distance to interview program directors, faculty,
\nstudents and graduates. He discovered that aspiring writers
\nconsider several factors – including funding, size,
\nselectivity and location – when choosing an MFA program.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nSince UM’s program began in 2000, it has stayed small and
\nselective, attracted outstanding students, retained its
\nexceptional faculty and been supported with private
\nfunding.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“We are thriving because of great students, an excellent
\nfaculty and generous financial support from John and Renee
\nGrisham,” Galef said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nFor three years straight, UM students in the program have
\ngarnered inclusion in Best New American Voices, an
\nanthology of the best of fiction workshops across the
\ncountry. Other student recognition includes the Association
\nof Writing Programs Intro Award for Non-Fiction, the Iron
\nHorse Discovery Award for Poetry, the Best American Poetry
\n2007 award and publication in a number of national
\nmagazines.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“This result is due to the efforts of an innovative
\nteaching staff and a department dedicated to keeping the
\nspirit of creative writing alive and well in Mississippi,”
\nsaid Patrick Quinn, chair and professor of English.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“The news comes as verification of what we’ve already
\nsuspected – that our program is doing everything right,”
\nsaid Beth Ann Fennelly, associate professor of English.
\n“We’re wildly proud of our students’ successes, and the
\nnotice our program has received is particularly remarkable
\nin that our program is relatively young and underfunded.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n
