OXFORD, Miss. – Two of Mississippi’s largest companies,
\nCellular South and Ergon Inc., have made generous
\ncontributions to the University of Mississippi School of
\nEngineering. Both companies were founded by UM graduates.<\/span>
\n

Wireless provider Cellular South has pledged $150,000 for
\nthe Cellular South Distance Learning Lab in the Old
\nChemistry building, and petroleum refiner Ergon has made a
\n$100,000 gift to the Campaign for the School of Engineering
\nfor the building’s renovation and equipment.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\u00a0\n<\/p>\n

\n“Both Cellular South and Ergon continue to be very generous
\nto the School of Engineering,” said Kai-Fong Lee, dean of
\nengineering. “We are so thankful that these Mississippi
\ncompanies continue to give time and resources to our
\nstudents.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe Distance Learning Lab is to be used primarily for the
\nIntroduction to Engineering course, which is taught online
\nfor high school students throughout Mississippi. The lab
\nalso will be used for other distance learning courses and
\nseminars presented by the school.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“We’re looking at this as an opportunity to participate and
\nbe involved with the exciting things going on at Ole Miss,”
\nsaid Hu Meena, president of Cellular South. “This really is
\na partnership between Cellular South and the School of
\nEngineering.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nErgon also has been instrumental in assisting the school
\nwith its co-op program, which integrates theory and
\npractice by blending classroom learning with practical work
\nexperience.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Ergon has a long history of working with the engineering
\nprogram at the University of Mississippi,” said Robert
\nLampton, Ergon president of supply and distribution and an
\nOle Miss alumnus. “It’s a great school, and we wanted to
\nhelp upgrade the facilities to keep it great.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nLeslie B. Lampton Sr., a 1948 UM graduate, founded Ergon in
\n1954 as a petroleum retailer with two employees. The
\ncompany has evolved into a network of diverse companies
\nemploying more than 2,500. Also headquartered in Jackson,
\nErgon and its nationwide subsidiaries stand as industry
\nleaders in refining and marketing, asphalt and emulsions,
\ntransportation and terminaling services, oil and gas
\noperations, embedded computing and real estate
\ndevelopment.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nFounded by Wade Creekmore Sr., a 1923 UM graduate, Cellular
\nSouth is headquartered in Jackson and has more than 85
\nretail locations. The company provides wireless service in
\nAlabama, Arkansas, Mississippi, the Florida panhandle and
\nsouthwest Tennessee, an area with more than 5 million
\npeople.
