OXFORD, Miss. – Russell Cartledge Adams of Madison has been
\nawarded the $40,000 Christine and Clarence Day Scholarship
\nto nurture his entrepreneurial spirit at the University of
\nMississippi.<\/span>
\n

A freshman in the School of Business Administration, Adams
\nplans to hone his business skills that he began developing
\nas a teenager.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\u00a0\n<\/p>\n

\nA native of Mandeville, La., Adams and his family relocated
\nto Madison following Hurricane Katrina. His parents, Chuck
\nand Ida Adams, both attended UM, so he has grown up as a
\ndevoted Ole Miss fan.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“My family has been affected greatly by Hurricane Katrina,
\nand I hope to relieve them as much as possible of any
\nfinancial assistance I would need. It is my vision that one
\nday soon I will join the business leaders of this great
\nstate in the post-Katrina economic recovery efforts, and
\nthis scholarship would assist me in achieving this goal,”
\nAdams wrote in his scholarship application.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n His entrepreneurship became evident during his teen years,
\nwhen he started and managed his own lawn care and car
\ndetailing businesses, The Lawn Boys and Dr. Shine. He said
\nhis ambition has led him to develop people skills and
\ninspired him to earn a business administration degree,
\nwhich will help him acquire the knowledge, skills,
\ncredibility and confidence necessary to achieve his
\ngoals.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nHe sees the scholarship as a means to accomplish more than
\nwhat is required in attaining a college degree.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“The Day Scholarship Fund will provide financial assistance
\nto allow me to explore summer study programs and
\ninternships more focused on gainful experiences than
\ndecisions based on monetary reasons,” Adams said. “During
\nmy time at Ole Miss I plan on taking advantage of the
\nbusiness school’s strong ties to the business community
\naround the South and specifically in Mississippi.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nAt Ridgeland High School, Adams was chosen as a STAR
\nstudent and listed on the National Honor Roll. A member of
\nthe National Honor Society, Key Club and Mu Alpha Theta, he
\nplayed on the school’s soccer and football teams. As a
\nvolunteer, he worked with the Red Cross and with C.A.S.T.
\nOff ministries to renovate homes for underprivileged
\nHattiesburg residents.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nAdams said he is excited about entering college and looks
\nforward to meeting new people, developing meaningful
\nrelationships and enjoying SEC athletics events.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Russell is the epitome of a scholar and leader,” said Sue
\nL. Hodge, assistant to the business dean. “He brings to Ole
\nMiss a resume of superior academic achievements, numerous
\nextracurricular activities and an impressive record of
\ncommunity involvement.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe Day Scholarship Fund was established in memory of
\nChristine Rogers Day and Clarence Cearns Day. An Aberdeen
\nnative, she was deeply involved in the community and had an
\nintense interest in education. He was a longtime Aberdeen
\nresident, who was active in business and interested in both
\ncivic and educational endeavors. Both were committed to the
\nvalue of higher education and the future of Mississippi.
