OXFORD, Miss. \u2013 Gregory James Alston Jr. of Hattiesburg, MS 39402 is the newly elected president of the 2013-2014 Associated Student Body at the University of Mississippi.<\/p>\n
\u201cI have been involved with the ASB since my first semester of my freshman year, and ever since then I have enjoyed being involved with student government,\u201d he said. \u201cWinning this election means a lot to me; it\u2019s something that I have worked really hard for, and I had a very strong campaign team that helped me accomplish this goal.\u201dThe campus inauguration ceremony for the new officers is scheduled at 2:30 p.m., March 26, on the steps of the historic Lyceum.<\/p>\n
A junior in the College of Liberal Arts, Alston is a member of the Trent Lott Leadership Institute. A Chancellor\u2019s Leadership Scholar, he is listed on the Dean\u2019s Honor Roll.<\/p>\n
He served as an ASB senator in 2010-2011 and 2011-2012. He was chosen the 2011-12 ASB Senator of the Year. He was committee chairman of the ASB Senate Athletics Committee and is the ASB director of Athletics and Recreation. His longtime goal had been to run for the top ASB post.<\/p>\n
His campaign platform included comprehensive attention to campus parking for students, special promotion of the University Creed and work to implement a five-day dead week before finals.<\/p>\n
He is a member of UM\u2019s Committee on Intercollegiate Athletics, Sensitivity and Respect Committee, Student Alumni Council and Cardinal Club. He is an officer of Sigma Chi fraternity, UM\u2019s Big Event, an annual campuswide community service project, and Reformed University Fellowship.<\/p>\n
He said his decision to attend Ole Miss was an easy one. He has been a Rebel fan all his life, with both of his parents having attended the university.<\/p>\n
\u201cI have a deep love and passion for Ole Miss,\u201d he said. \u201cI have had a great experience here. The friendships and connections I have made are some I will never forget. I have also enjoyed giving back to the university by being involved on campus. There is no other place I would rather be.\u201d<\/p>\n
Slated to graduate in spring 2014, Alston said he has not completely decided on a career, but is eyeing either graduate school or law school and a career in athletics administration or politics.<\/p>\n
A graduate of Presbyterian Christian School, he is the son of Betsy and Greg Alston.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
