OXFORD, Miss. – An interactive mobile exhibit that gives
\nvisitors a simulated journey into space comes to the
\nUniversity of Mississippi Sept. 20-21.<\/span>
\n

NASA’s Vision for Space Exploration Experience will be
\nparked in front of the Old Chemistry building on Lyceum
\nCircle. The display, sponsored by the School of
\nEngineering, is free and open to the public 9 a.m.-4 p.m.
\nThursday and 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\u00a0\n<\/p>\n

\nAt NASA’s request, the school is planning demonstrations in
\nCarrier Hall to complement activities in the mobile unit.
\nSchool and other groups are invited to schedule visits by
\ncalling 662-915-1849 or e-mailing mwoolsey@olemiss.edu.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nInside the exhibit, patrons will experience a virtual
\njourney to the moon and Mars, surrounded by stars and other
\nplanets. The 3-D imagery projects the illusion of stepping
\non various surfaces of the moon and Mars, and flying to
\nSaturn’s moon Titan. Holographic video screens create
\nfloating images, allowing visitors’ hand motions to
\n“control” and “create” bases for human life on the
\nplanets.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“This NASA trailer on campus will provide an excellent
\nopportunity to demonstrate Ole Miss engineering to middle
\nand high school students and the Oxford and Lafayette
\nCounty community,” said Maxine Woolsey, the school’s
\neducation outreach specialist.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nUM alumnus Richard G. Turner, who works at the
\nNASA\/Marshall Space Flight Center’s Office of Strategic
\nAnalysis and Communications, was instrumental in bringing
\nthe exhibit to campus.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“As a graduate of the Ole Miss School of Engineering, I
\nwanted to bring this exhibit to my alma mater in hopes that
\nit might possibly inspire visitors and students to become
\nengineers and scientists who help NASA explore space,”
\nTurner said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe exhibit is transported by a tractor and trailer that
\noccupy an 80-by-30-foot space. Its tentative tour schedule
\ncalls for stops at the Mississippi Museum of Natural
\nScience in Jackson Sept. 25-27 and at the University of
\nSouthern Mississippi in Hattiesburg Oct. 1-3.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“We wanted to come to Ole Miss the weekend of Sept. 22
\nbecause the university will be hosting the national
\nchampion Florida Gators,” Turner said. “Since Florida is
\nthe home of the John F. Kennedy Space Center, which is led
\nby Ole Miss alum Bill Parsons, we feel that it is an
\nexcellent opportunity for Ole Miss and NASA to promote both
\nthe Campaign for the School of Engineering and NASA’s
\nVision for Space Exploration.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“The NASA mobile exhibit will definitely expose the
\nstudents to the wonders of engineering and space
\nexploration,” said Kai Fong Lee, engineering dean. “We are
\nthrilled that it is coming to the Ole Miss campus.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n
