OXFORD, Miss. — The university’s Alcohol Task Force plans
\nto reconvene Tuesday (Sept. 4) to hear reports from
\nuniversity and community officials on efforts to curb
\nabusive and illegal drinking.<\/span>
\n

The meeting, set for 3 p.m. in the Yerby Conference Center
\non campus, is open to the public. The session is to include
\npresentations by Oxford Mayor Richard Howorth, UM Attorney
\nLee Tyner and Dean of Students Sparky Reardon.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\u00a0\n<\/p>\n

\n“The university and city have taken the proverbial baton
\nand swiftly moved to implement most of the Alcohol Task
\nForce recommendations,” said Douglass Sullivan-Gonzalez,
\ndean of the Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College and a
\nco-chair of the task force. “If we look at both the city
\nand university accomplishments, we will be amazed at the
\ndepth and breadth of the measures to ensure the safety and
\neducation of our mutual constituents.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe task force, chartered in October 2006, includes UM
\nfaculty, staff and students, as well as representatives
\nfrom the Oxford community. The group is chaired by former
\nAmerican Medical Association president Dr. J. Edward Hill
\nof Tupelo, and also includes Barbara Collier, director of
\nStudent Health Services; and Roun McNeal, former Associated
\nStudent Body president, as co-chairs.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe group gathered data from previous surveys of UM
\nstudents, national studies of alcohol use among teens and
\nyoung adults, and experiences from other universities. Its
\nfinal report, issued in January, recommended that the
\nuniversity make its “two-strike” policy permanent, pursue
\nstricter enforcement of alcohol laws and require alcohol
\neducation for all freshmen, among other efforts. It also
\nrecommended a stronger partnership between the university,
\ncity and county to combat alcohol abuse.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThis summer, the university has developed a comprehensive
\neducation and communications strategy for its alcohol
\npolicy. As part of the effort, the university has mailed
\ninformational postcards to 95,000 alumni and supporters,
\nand included similar cards in all football ticket orders.
\nNewspaper, radio and Internet ads also are being rolled out
\nthis week.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe city of Oxford has strengthened ordinances governing
\nalcohol sales and server training and has stepped up
\nenforcement of alcohol regulations.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n
