As one of America’s leading universities, it is our
\nobligation to address the important issues facing our
\nnation. For many years, society has recognized that the
\nmisuse of alcohol among young people has been the number
\none social challenge on our nation’s college and university
\ncampuses.<\/span>
\n

After years of discussion about the heartache and damage
\nresulting from alcohol abuse, we joined forces with the
\ncity of Oxford and Lafayette County to confront the issue
\nhead-on. Last fall we convened a joint Alcohol Task Force,
\nand that group’s recommendations are providing a model of
\ncooperation for the nation. We expect positive results from
\nour efforts.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\u00a0\n<\/p>\n

\nThis is not a new undertaking for us only the most
\nrecent.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nOle Miss has had numerous programs in place that addressed
\nconcerns about alcohol and drug abuse problems. Four years
\nago we employed an on-campus administrator for Substance
\nAbuse Prevention to deal specifically with primary
\nprevention issues. The university’s Counseling Center
\noffers programs for students who have violated laws and are
\nrequired by the courts to receive counseling for alcohol or
\ndrug abuse. We also have several collaborative efforts in
\nplace with the University Police Department, Campus
\nHousing, the Center for Health Promotion and Health
\nBehavior, athletics, ROTC and the Mississippi court
\nsystem.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nWe are making progress, but there is always more to do.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nBased on the recommendations of the task force, we
\ncommitted significant funds for an alcohol abuse awareness
\nand education program. Introduced this fall, it involves an
\neight-hour online course called AlcoholEdu required of all
\nentering freshmen, fraternity and sorority members, and
\nstudent athletes. Eventually, every Ole Miss student will
\nbe required to take the course and pass an examination
\nbefore being eligible to enroll for classes.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nLast November we implemented a two-strike suspension
\npolicy. Any student found guilty of two alcohol or drug
\nrules violations will be suspended from school. “Alcohol
\nviolation” includes driving under the influence, public
\ndrunk, minor in possession or alcohol-related violations of
\nuniversity polities or state law. First offense will result
\nin a student being placed on probation; second conviction
\nwhile on probation results in suspension.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nBecause the vast majority of our students are responsible
\nand will join us in this critical effort, and because our
\ncommunity is ready to address the challenges of alcohol
\nabuse, we will succeed. But the challenge is formidable.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nTogether we can achieve better lives for all, serve as a
\nnational model and reduce the number of destructive
\nincidents that occur as a result of misusing alcohol.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n
