OXFORD, Miss. – Brett Sokolow, a higher education attorney
\nwho specializes in sexual misconduct and campus security,
\nvisits the University of Mississippi Tuesday (Sept. 11) to
\ndeliver a public address and interact with students about
\nthe risks involving alcohol and sex.<\/span>
\n

Sokolow, editor of the Report on Campus Safety and Student
\nDevelopment and president of the National Center for Higher
\nEducation Risk Management, speaks on “Drunk Sex’ or Date
\nRape: Do You Know the Difference?” at 7 p.m. in the Ford
\nCenter for the Performing Arts. The presentation is free
\nand open to the public.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\u00a0\n<\/p>\n

\nThe author of 10 books on campus security, sexual
\nmisconduct and campus judicial affairs, Sokolow draws on
\nhis legal experience to facilitate this interactive jury
\nexercise in which his audience “hears” a trial based on a
\nreal sexual assault case. He has presented the program at
\nmore than a thousand colleges and high schools.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Today’s campus culture can be confusing to students
\nbecause of conflicting messages and common myths about
\nalcohol and sex,” said Mary Carruth, director of the Sarah
\nIsom Center for Women and Gender Studies. “Brett Sokolow –
\nwithout preaching – helps students uncover these myths in
\nan engaging way so that by the hour’s end, they understand
\nrelevant laws and methods of clear communication.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nAt noon in the Ole Miss Student Union ballroom, Solokow
\nplans to meet with invited students on “10 Things Every
\nStudent Should Know About Drinking.” The hourlong
\ninteractive program is touted to help “reinforce harm
\nreduction emphasis, underline key enforcement initiatives,
\nencourage the use of protective behaviors, empower
\nbystander intervention and discourage the enabling of
\nhigh-risk consumption (of alcohol).”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nSokolow also has scheduled a session with University
\nCounseling Center staff and a two-hour training event for
\nstudent residence hall advisers and other key campus
\npersonnel.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nCo-sponsoring Sokolow’s visit to UM are the Isom Center,
\nOffice of the Dean of Students, Department of Campus
\nProgramming, Office of Greek Life, Athletics, Office of
\nHealth Promotion, Student Housing and Residence Life,
\nUniversity Counseling Center and the Associated Student
\nBody.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n
