OXFORD, Miss. – The second annual Rally in the Grove kicks
\noff the 2007 home football season for the University of
\nMississippi at 5:30 p.m. Friday.<\/span>
\n

Sponsored by the Student Spirit Committee, Rally in the
\nGrove features entertainment by the Krackerjacks on the
\nGrove stage. The Ole Miss cheerleaders, Rebelettes and the
\nPride of the South Marching Band also are to be on hand to
\nhelp with the pep rally. Rebel coaches and team members are
\nexpected to participate.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\u00a0\n<\/p>\n

\n“We are so excited about Rally in the Grove,” said Collins
\nTuohy, SSC president. “The football team is excited, too.
\nAthletes are so willing to help because it makes a
\ndifference to them when they are out there and the students
\nsection is behind them.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe committee was founded in February 2006, when a group of
\nstudents went to Associate Athletic Director Derek Horne
\nwith concerns about the student support for athletics. With
\nthe help of the group’s adviser, Molly Meisenheimer,
\nassistant director of the Ole Miss Women’s Council, the SSC
\nbegan organizing events to aid student support of Ole Miss
\nathletics.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“This is a 100-percent student-led organization,” Tuohy
\nsaid. “Everything we do is done by the students, for the
\nstudents.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe group is providing more ways for the students to be
\ninvolved this year with the addition of a Rebel Road Trip
\nto Auburn. Three buses have been chartered for students to
\nattend the Oct. 27 Auburn game. A $100 ticket includes a
\nstudent game ticket, bus ticket, meal and snacks. For more

\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe SSC meets every other Monday in the Student Union. A
\nselection committee chooses members when applications
\nbecome available.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“We notify students through the Daily Mississippian about
\napplications,” Wood said. “We hold our members accountable;
\nthey are only allowed two absences per semester.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nWith student support, the SSC hopes to continue to do more
\neach year to improve campus support for athletics.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“We have the most diverse group of students and we are
\nfully committed to promoting Ole Miss athletics,” Wood
\nsaid. “We are basically die-hard Rebels.”
