OXFORD, Miss. – Three new group-based services are offered
\nby the University of Mississippi’s Counseling Center this
\nfall for students who are dealing with substance abuse
\nproblems or have been affected by the substance abuse
\nproblems of others.<\/span>
\n

“Providing effective and confidential services has always
\nbeen a goal for the center,” said Marc Showalter, director
\nof the Counseling Center. “We want students and the entire
\nuniversity community to know that they can be helped in an
\nenvironment that is safe, caring and professional. This
\nprogram will allow us to serve a need that is important to
\nour entire community.”
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\u00a0\n<\/p>\n

\nThe new services are Crossroads, an intensive outpatient
\nprogram, and the weekly support groups Oasis and Turning
\nPoint.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nPreviously, students seeking formal substance abuse
\ntreatment usually had to withdraw from school. The students
\nwere faced with choosing residential or inpatient
\ntreatment, which usually lasts a minimum of 30 days, or
\nseeking outpatient treatment elsewhere. The closest
\noutpatient treatment center to Oxford is Grenada, an hour’s
\ndrive.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Our goal is to provide comprehensive treatment and support
\nto meet students’ needs while they remain enrolled at the
\nuniversity,” said Amy K. Fisher, alcohol and drug services
\ncoordinator.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nCrossroads is the center’s intensive alcohol and drug
\ntreatment, which offers a nontraditional approach tailored
\nto individual needs of the student. During the
\neight-to-10-week program, students set their own treatment
\ngoals in conjunction with counselors while receiving
\nindividual and group support.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“We are so happy to offer students a chance to receive
\ntreatment while staying in their regular environment at the
\nuniversity,” Fisher said. “In many cases, if a student
\nleaves his or her normal social environment to seek
\ntreatment, re-entering that environment after treatment can
\nbe extremely difficult.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nOasis is a weekly support group for students maintaining an
\nalcohol-free and drug-free way of life. The group offers a
\nstudent-focused approach that addresses the unique issues
\nof maintaining a substance-free lifestyle in a college
\natmosphere.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“A lot of students may have been to rehab or are trying to
\nstay alcohol and drug free,” Fisher said. “This is a chance
\nto build a community between these individuals. Support
\nfrom people in similar situations is of immeasurable
\nimportance in these situations”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nTurning Point is a support program for students who have
\nbeen affected by a loved one’s drinking or drug abuse. This
\ngroup offers a safe place for students to take steps toward
\nhealing through interaction with others sharing similar
\nexperiences.
