OXFORD, Miss. – James and Sandra Mayo of Louisville have
\nbeen honored by their five children with a scholarship
\nendowment in their name at the University of Mississippi.<\/span>
\n

Lee Ann Mayo of Jackson, Cal Mayo of Oxford, John Mayo of
\nBirmingham, Peter Mayo of Oxford and Jane Mayo of
\nLouisville have given $25,000 to seed the James C. and
\nSandra J. Mayo Scholarship Endowment.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

\n\u00a0\n<\/p>\n

\nThe fund, which recognizes the couple’s longtime commitment
\nto public education and their passion for Ole Miss, will
\nprovide scholarships for Louisville High School graduates
\nwho pursue degrees at the university.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“The children have always known how we feel about education
\nand about Ole Miss, which both hold special places in our
\nhearts,” said Sandra Mayo. “We certainly shared tears and
\nhugs over this surprise.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nCal Mayo, an attorney who also serves on the UM Foundation
\nBoard, said he and his siblings wanted to create a
\nscholarship to pay tribute to their parents’ “firm belief”
\nin education.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Our parents have always told us that there is nothing more
\nimportant than education,” Cal Mayo said. “They made a
\ndefinite choice to support public education when we were
\ngrowing up. Because of the way they stood up for their
\ncommunity, such as its schools, we have all benefited and
\nhave pursued an array of educational opportunities.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nJames and Sandra Mayo began their relationship with Ole
\nMiss as students on the Oxford campus, which led to a juris
\ndoctorate for him and bachelor’s degree in education for
\nSandra, a native of Brandon. After graduating, they
\nreturned to James’ hometown of Louisville to build a law
\npractice, Fair & Mayo, and a life for their family.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“With five children, we were associated with the Louisville
\npublic school system a long time – from 1967 to 1998,”
\nSandra Mayo said. “We wanted to teach our children to be
\nbroad-minded people who could work and live alongside all
\nother people. We were very pleased with the education they
\nreceived.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nJames Mayo said, “Our five children enjoyed 61 years of
\npublic education along with numerous years of college,
\npost-graduate and law school in institutions of higher
\nlearning, for which we are truly grateful.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nCal Mayo, an Ole Miss graduate, began developing the idea
\nof a scholarship with Sandra Guest, vice president of the
\nUM Foundation. “It was a privilege to work with these
\nsiblings who are obviously devoted to honoring their
\nparents and passing on their values – in this case, the
\nvalue of education,” Guest said. “This scholarship is a
\ncelebration of the Mayo family and its commitment to
\nhelping vitalize society through education. We are grateful
\nfor this scholarship gift and for the inspiration it will
\nprovide to other families.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nLee Ann Mayo, a graduate of Ole Miss and a lobbyist, said
\nshe was surprised to learn there was a way for her and her
\nsiblings to create the scholarship.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“I’ve said all my life that I would like to start a
\nscholarship someday. I had no idea there was such a
\nfeasible way to do it now. The UM Foundation helped set up
\neverything, including the scholarship criteria,” she said.
\n“What makes this so great is that we can not only honor our
\nparents for taking an unpopular stand and supporting public
\neducation in Louisville, but also help students today who
\npursue a college education at Ole Miss.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe Mayo Scholarship is to be awarded on the basis of
\nacademic achievement, financial need, leadership abilities
\nand personal character. In the event there is no eligible
\napplicant from Louisville High School, the scholarship is
\nto be awarded to a graduate of Nanih Waiya or Noxapater
\nhigh schools. A UM scholarship committee is to make the
\nselections.
