\nOXFORD, Miss. – Following 11 consecutive years of
\nsignificant enrollment increases at the University of
\nMississippi, administrators are breathing a sigh of relief
\nthis fall, at least on the main campus in Oxford.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\nEnrollment finally seems to have leveled off on the campus
\nwhere more than 14,000 students took classes last fall.
\nThis year, 13,910 students are enrolled at Oxford.
\nPreliminary figures released today (Sept. 12) by the Board
\nof Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning show
\nUM’s total unduplicated head count for all four campuses is
\n17,323 – 11 more than last year.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“Our enrollment has been climbing steadily and consistently
\nfor a decade, putting pressure on our residence halls and
\nclassroom space, and requiring our faculty to teach more
\nand larger sections,” said Chancellor Robert Khayat. “We
\nnow have an opportunity to catch up from the steady growth
\nwe have experienced.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nKhayat pointed out that the university is hiring an
\nadditional 40 new faculty this fall and has plans to build
\na new residential college. A new law school building is
\nalso on the drawing board that should enable the current
\nlaw school building to be converted for general classroom
\nuse.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“This fall’s enrollment gives us some much needed breathing
\nroom,” Khayat said.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nDespite the modest decline on the Oxford campus, a record
\n2,194 students are enrolled at the University of
\nMississippi Medical Center, up 102 students (4.9 percent)
\nover last fall. Enrollment jumps also have occurred in
\nTupelo (9.0 percent), where 616 students are enrolled, up
\n51 students over last fall, and Southaven (7.2 percent),
\nwhere 853 students are taking classes, up 57 students over
\nlast fall.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nUM’s freshman class, with 2,471 students, is the
\nuniversity’s second-largest ever recorded and includes 20
\nNational Merit Finalists, one National Achievement Finalist
\nand five National Merit Semifinalists.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nThe university’s Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College
\nhas enrolled 670 students, including 212 freshmen. Last
\nyear, the honors college enrolled 610 students, of which
\n230 were freshmen.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\n“The average ACT score of all our honors college students
\nis still 30, so we are continuing to enroll only the
\nbrightest,” said Douglass Sullivan-Gonzalez, the college’s
\ndean.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n

\nPreliminary figures indicate that 69 percent (11,951) of
\nall UM students are from Mississippi and 19.0 percent
\n(3,273) are minorities.
