\nOXFORD, Miss. – A University of Mississippi business
\nalumnus has donated $100,000 to his alma mater to create
\nthe B. Stirling Tighe Memorial Scholarship Endowment.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
\nBowman “Bo” Stirling Tighe Jr. and his wife, Sylvia, of
\nRidgeland created the scholarship in memory of Bo’s father,
\nwho also was an Ole Miss alumnus.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n“My father loved Ole Miss and he is the reason I wanted to
\ncome to school here.” Tighe said. “He’s also the reason I
\nwanted to give back – and am able to give back – to Ole
\nMiss. If there is one thing that I learned from my father,
\nit’s that there is no substitute for hard work. Because of
\nhim instilling a strong work ethic in me, I have excelled
\nin my career. And it’s my success that has put me in the
\nposition I’m in now as far as being able to make this
\ngift.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nThe elder Tighe graduated from UM with both a bachelor of
\nbusiness administration degree and juris doctor degree. He
\nwas a lifelong resident of Jackson and practiced law there
\nfor 34 years. A strong supporter of the university’s
\nathletics program, he was a member of the Ole Miss Alumni
\nAssociation, as well as the Ole Miss Loyalty Foundation. He
\nwas also a member of the American Bar Association,
\nMississippi Bar Association, Hinds County Bar Association
\nand Mississippi Trial Lawyers Association. Tighe died in
\n1987 at age 59.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nThe scholarship in his honor will assist deserving men and
\nwomen with demonstrated financial need in their pursuit of
\ndegrees in the School of Business Administration, with
\npreference given to students in the petroleum land
\nmanagement program or students hoping to pursue a graduate
\nlaw degree.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n“We are deeply grateful to the Tighe family for this
\ntremendous gift,” said Brian Reithel, dean of the business
\nschool. “Scholarships are one of our most pressing needs
\nand this gift will help attract students who might not
\notherwise be able to attend Ole Miss.” Tighe said he wanted
\nto create a scholarship both to honor his father and
\ninspire more students to study petroleum land management at
\nOle Miss, a profession from which he has made a successful
\ncareer.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\n “During my lifelong career as an oil and gas landman, I
\nhave recognized the need for more men and women to enter
\nthe oil and gas business today, especially with the
\nincrease in energy prices in recent years,” he said. “We
\nneed more graduates of petroleum land management program,
\nand I am hopeful this scholarship will encourage more Ole
\nMiss students to consider this field as their chosen
\nprofession.”
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nTighe graduated from Ole Miss in 1977 with a degree in
\nbusiness. He is a certified professional landman and has
\nbeen active in the oil and gas business as an independent
\nlandman since 1979. He is a member of the American
\nAssociation of Petroleum Landmen and the Mississippi
\nAssociation of Petroleum Landmen. In 1989, he formed
\nSunbelt Resources Inc., a consulting land and brokerage
\ncompany that provides field land work services to major and
\nindependent exploration companies operating primarily in
\nMississippi, Alabama and Louisiana.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nHis wife, Sylvia, a native of Laurel, also attended Ole
\nMiss. She worked for OffiSource Inc. in Jackson for 24
\nyears selling contract furniture until she retired in 2004.
\nDuring her career there, the company was involved in many
\nof the restoration projects on the UM campus. She is
\ninvolved in the day-to-day operations of Sunbelt Resources
\nInc. and also works as a Realtor with Elizabeth Knight,
\nRealtor of Jackson.
\n<\/span>\n<\/p>\n\nThe Tighes have two children, who plan to continue their
\nfamily’s legacy at Ole Miss. Tara Hallie, 17, a senior at
\nJackson Academy, plans to enter the university in fall
\n2008. Bowman Stirling Tighe III, 15, is a freshman at
\nJackson Academy and plans to enter UM in 2011.
