Charles W. Hartman served as dean of the UM School of Pharmacy from 1961-1970.<\/p><\/div>\n

OXFORD, Miss. \u2013 A University of Mississippi professor emeritus has published a book on the late Charles W. Hartman, dean of the UM School of Pharmacy from 1961 to 1970.<\/p>\n

“‘Visionary’ is the term often used to describe Hartman,” said Mickey Smith, author of the book and Barnard Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Pharmacy Administration. “However, he was more than just a man with good ideas. He was a doer. He wanted to see things through to their conclusion, even if it meant ‘bending’ a few rules. He had a kind of charisma that made people get on board with him.”<\/p>\n

The book, “Hello. I’m Charlie Hartman,” details Hartman’s activities and accomplishments throughout his career.<\/p>\n

“It is generally agreed that in (Hartman’s) brief time as dean, he took the school from being understaffed and underfunded to a position of national prominence,” Smith said. “He secured funding for Faser Hall, pharmacy’s\u00a0first home. He also established the Research Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences, among many other achievements.”<\/p>\n

The book contains remembrances from John Leslie, Hartman’s personal friend and former Oxford mayor. Former Mississippi Gov. William Winter and Hartman’s daughter, Jan, also contributed sections.<\/p>\n

Smith has published some 450 research and professional papers, written or edited 22 books and helped found the\u00a0Journal of Pharmaceutical Marketing and Management<\/em>. “Hello. I’m Charlie Hartman” is Smith’s fourth book since he retired in 2003.<\/p>\n
